just checked your post # 2, just curious, is the German Phillips H9 still better than the GE +130? Thanks for doing this for all of us!

 

That was recently discussed in the 2nd Gen thread. It can be done, some have used steel wool and rubbing alcohol, though acetone sounds like a gentler solution. See some comments here.

The Philips H9s are higher performing, but do require bulb base modification unlike the GE/Tungsrams.

I just want to chime in here that the hikari ultra bulbs are a huge upgrade from what I had earlier and probably the best led bulb you can get. That is info from this thread and it is accurate. My previous bulbs were $70 and about 25% dimmer than the hikaris. Listen to whatever @crashnburn80 has to say.

 

Not to sound condescending but if you are truly listening you won’t put LED bulbs in a halogen projector.

The OEM LED headlights are what everyone really wants. Sure we don’t like paying for them. But that doesn’t change the fact that they are what we desire.

nope. Too much white for the winter. Too much hassle if a single LED goes out. That’s a failed inspection in any state that does them.

Anyone interested in Hikari or +130 for a whiter light is what I was thinking of.

 

@crashnburn80 not sure if this is the appropriate thread but what’s your best recommendation for heavy snow storms for an off road light bar or accessory lighting?

For heavy snow storms your best bet is a solid performing high powered long wavelength fog light, not a light bar. I’d suggest the Diode Dynamics SAE SS3 Pro fogs in selective yellow. See the SAE fog thread for the full review.

 

They won’t run hot enough to prevent freezing and the 6000k color temp will have lots of reflection off the snow. Not ideal for snow conditions vs halogens which will run hot enough to prevent freezing and longer wavelengths will reflect off snow less.

What i am wondering though, does Toyota just sell cars with LED headlights without means to combat those weather conditions? From the top of my head, the Tacoma, RAV4, Corolla, Camry and most of the Lexus line are standard LED headlights on certain trims.

I know some other manufacturers take some measures to prevent these.

 

If I get a chance I’ll try to take some photos for you. I’m curious myself. Not super sure how many times I’ll be driving where it’s dark enough that I need headlights to see but bright enough due to reflection off the snow that it’s harder to see than a yellower halogen and not blizzard like fog conditions where snow melt is a big concern. I will say that the DRL’s on these LED headlights are significantly brighter than the halogen ones and halfway decent on their own for campsite headlights. And yeah I know you already know all that from having them on longer than me.

 

Fwiw, I've never really had an issue with frozen headlights. Like the occasional ice storm but never really been an issue for me personally. And I'm from Canada so no bs

 

There are heated LED headlights, which have a defroster built into the lens much like a rear window defroster on many cars. However, they are not very common. And all snow won’t freeze the headlights, it needs to be wet enough to stick and accumulate. But if snow is a significant concern, halogen with performance bulbs is typically the best way to go.

 

Crash, I am confused. What is your recommendation for a third gen new light harness? H4’s or H11’s. Thanx
