People have wildly different expectations for how a transmission should shift, when it should shift, how smooth it should shift, etc. The fact of the matter is, it works as Toyota intended and it seems to be pretty reliable. I drive interstates a good bit and the truck will run 70-80 just fine for me. If it needs to downshift, it does so. I never expected it to run 80 mph at 2,000 RPM uphill without downshifting. Like I said, different expectations.

Just a heads up if you’re considering a Tundra, it does that too. My Tundra downshifted in almost the exact same spots on our regularly travelled highways. I know you said you had other parts added, but you could sell those and get money back. Right now Tacoma’s are selling at a premium. If I hated a truck that bad, I would be taking advantage of the current situation.

To be honest man, I think you’re blowing this out of proportion. I have a ‘19 DCSB OR that I bought new from dealer with 143 miles and have 20k on it now. For the first 500 to 1000 miles I would have agreed—it drove super inconsistent and I would always hit the ECT button to try to get it to drive how I wanted. I used sport religiously. I came from a 2door Honda Civic Si (manual only) and I was actually legitimately frustrated with the Tacoma.

BUT THEN something magical happened, it either learned how I like to drive (skinny pedal through the floor) or it worked itself in somehow. I never drive in sport, nor use ECT, now. I’ve hauled a uhaul trailer from Dallas, TX to Rochester, NY. I’ve driven more than a handful of 10+ hr cross-country drives, anywhere from TX to MI to upstate NY. In terrible snow, rain, hail, etc. I love how it drives now. Stomp on the gas and there’s no mistaking it for a grandma grocery getter like you’re making it out to be.

That tech wasn’t a fan of Tacomas, and idk why because these trucks are amazing. FWIW my truck does just fine in the hills of TN on the freeway with cruise on at speeds of 60-85. Maintains it just fine, and there are some pretty dramatic slopes. I think yours just needs more time being broken in or something. Don’t be afraid to really stomp on it and play it aggressive with sport mode, because thats what I did initially.

I hope you give it another chance, and I hope you’re pleasantly surprised.

PS don’t be gentle with the skinny pedal, floor the damn thing if need be.

I was seeing the same thing in my area, bought mine new in May and within a month was seeing 2018's selling for more than I paid new. Now that the 2021's are hitting dealers it seems they have leveled out the used prices.

They are starting to discount new trucks here. But jesus, some of the loaded OR’s are now 46k MSRP.

Ya the premium package isn’t worth the price IMO, i think it was somewhere around 4,500. I stuck with cloth seats and I never use a sunroof anyway. 45-46k was too steep for me

I came from 2 Tundras a 4.6 and a 5.7. The 4.6 down shifted a lot but the 5.7 was a beast. When towing with the 5.7 it hardly ever down shifted. You just have to realized the Tacoma is gutless.

Yea, the Tacomas don't really pick up until about 2,500-3000rpm. Once you get it up there and above it takes off pretty quickly.

I had a dodge before that had a very light peddle and was initially frustrated with the Tacoma at low RPMs but when I figured out how it shifted it has been fine. I still look forward to driving it each time I get in.

I bought my first Tacoma back in November of 1995, a 1996 Xtracab model, as the new ones had just come out. I kept it and maintained it meticulously up until April of 2019, when I sold it after ordering my new 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport. I paid $13,500 OUT THE DOOR for the 96 back in 1995, and when I sold it last year, I got $6700 cash for it, just a hair under HALF of what I paid for it over 23 years earlier! The book value at the time was about $2500, but I take care of my stuff, so it actually looked new inside and out. I knew it was worth more than the book value, but hey, even I was amazed that I got that much! I can attest to the rumors that Tacomas Do hold their value! Anyway, just because I still like showing it off, even though I sold it, here is a video I made of my 1996 Tacoma XtraCab in January of 2019, just before I sold it.

There is a solution to the high prices of used Tacoma's. Stop buying them at these high prices. By doing so just makes it easier for a dealer to not negotiate on a new one. I will never understand why someone would pay what some are asking for a used Tacoma. Go ahead and pay those prices if that makes you happy.

Some people are deluded into thinking "buying used is a better deal" even when they are paying ~2K less than new (or just as much as new) for a used truck. Even when they are out of warranty.

Seen the local dealer sell used 2018 or 2019s with 30-40K on the clock for about what I bought mine new in 2019. And in an off-roady area these are not all pavement queens that just were driven to the grocery store and back.

    OME and worth every penny.
There's a washing machine shortage also. I'm hearing of people ordering/purchasing/selling for more because of the month long wait.
