Anyone using them and more specifically. Which model to securing it did you choose? Does the window suction cups actually stay on in offroad situations? Thanks ram phone mount.jpg

I replaced the lower bolt on the driver side door grab handle (on the A pillar) with one of the knobs and mount it there. I think I had to get a different bolt than what came with the RAM mount, pretty sure the RAM was SAE. It's been about 10 years since I did it and I can't remember :)

I’ve used suction it works good and mostly stays on. Sometimes if it’s too hot it will fall off but Offroad no issue. I had the grab handle too and really like that. Removed it recently due to adding a boost and AFR gauge so it uses the same place but that’s an awesome location. My only hesitation was it falling out wheeling but never did.

I really like the handle idea except I dont have an o shit handle on my driver side. Was thinking about possibly taking that piece of trim off where the oshit handle would be and bolting one in.

Not sure if the 1st gen has anywhere to bolt to but worth looking into it. PXL_20201101_224401708.jpg

I'd advise you use only existing fasteners or holes in or around the a-pillar structure since it is a critical member for rollover protection. Making new holes could be a bad idea if they are in the wrong place.

Theres a plastic trim piece over the frame correct? Couldnt I take the piece of trim off and bolt the phone mount down to the trim and then put it back?

The suction cup sucks and opening the spring loaded phone clamp sucks too because you need to use two hands. I had a RokForm for 2years that I loved and held much better suction wise. You could also twist on and off easily with one hand. The wing tabs broke on that because the original were plastic but I think they may be metal now and I’ll be switching when I can.

I'm surprised that the '01 doesn't have a handle there. It's handy that the '02 does. The plastic covering of the a-pillar should be strong enough with a little bit of extra support on the backside. If I were in your spot, I'd drill a hole and install a Riv-Nut with a backing washer. Only downside is that you get one shot at it unless you've got a spare plastic a-pillar trim piece kicking around :)

I had one of the RAM X-Grip holders for awhile. It would invariably press either the lock button or one of the volume buttons when I mounted my iPhone, which was really irritating. I replaced it with a RAM QuickGrip holder, which is much better.

I had the phone holder mounted with an adhesive-base RAM ball glued to my dash up until recently. I didn’t like exerting torque on the adhesive base when mounting or removing my phone, so I ended up getting an Expedition Essentials 2TPAM dash mount and modding the hell out of it so I could bolt the QuickGrip holder to the front face. This is the perfect setup, in my opinion. Pretty expensive though.

Been using the Ram X-grip for both my phone and tablet(2 diff x-grips) with Hondos unholey mount for a while. No complaints what so ever.

I suppose you could, might be kind of floppy for anything on a 3"+ arm. Couldn't say for sure.

I don't think that fits anything besides 2016+.

OP, if you bolt to the trim, you might want to use a low profile head fastener like an AN525 type head and put it in so the head is under the trim for clearance to the a-pillar, or at least pull the trim and see how much gap you have to work with. Mounting a rivnut or any other threaded fastener to the plastic is not a good idea, it had to grip the plastic and support both installation torque and the weight/bouncing off the mount/phone.

If the 02 has a grab handle there the 01 might already have brackets there for a handle.

I wasnt suggesting he buy from Hondo, just giving context so he doesnt think the X-Grip is floating next to the steering wheel.

He asked about phone holders and i was providing input.

    None...yet
Been using RAM mounts for years on my DS bikes. They are consistently the benchmark to beat for rugged attachment points. In the DS world, vibrations are a very big deal and products that work off road in vehicles will be destroyed within an hour of DS riding. I have the X-mounts mounted to each of 3 DS bikes. Some thoughts:

    1. The rubber grabbers at the end of the X-clamp have a tendency to fall off when taking the phone off the mount - put some adhesive in the slot of the rubber mounts, I use contact adhesive.
    2. The rubber grabbers, depending on your phone, may be pressing on your phone's buttons. Not a deal breaker, and probably more of a hassle on a bike where using one hand to adjust the phone may require a full stop.
    3. The balls can be upgraded to aluminum/steel knurled balls - this upgrade decreases how much the clamp will move on bouncy roads. I have used the suction cups in my vehicles. Although they are probably the best cups on the market, they are not as secure as using the ball mounts.
    4. I replace all the hardware with metric fasteners. Tools are a commodity on DS bikes, and fewer tools means less weight and a smaller tool pack.
    5. My X-grips came with a piece of rubber that looks like a gasket. It is kinda loops around the phone to add extra security (see photo). I always use this, and it has kept the phone in place even after some particularly nasty crashes. The photo was taken by the phone that was in the mount, that is why it is not in the x-grip.

I am about to start building my new Taco, and I will be getting rather than relying on suction cups.

I recently installed an Expedition Essentials track and RAM mount for my phone. Today I traveled for work on a short 4 hour trip. The phone vibrated badly. I did some adjustments which would help, but only temporarily.

Anyone have any issues like this?

If so, what was the solution?

Shortening the effective lever arm (horizontal distance from base to phone) by adjusting it to be more vertical might help. Or making the channel that the base mounts to more rigid might help.

I adjusted the arm from horizontal to a slight angle of about 30 degrees. This helped a lot with the vibration however, it created another issue, the phone started bouncing. The track is screwed in there places and bolted into the brackets for the radio. I don’t think it can be tied down any tighter.

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
I run the same EE TTM but use a Rokform case and mount on a Ram ball and extension. Get the 3" Ram extension (or shorter) to shorten the lever arm. My S21 with magnetic case and cnc'd Rokform adapter is pretty heavy and with the shorter extension, is really stable. The TTM is way stout so that's not an issue. The X mount looks to really add a lot of length which, obviously, increases the moment significantly. My Rokform mount is heavy but compact so the phone isn't stuck way out beyond the dash.
