Portable Air Compressor Suggestions?

Can anyone recommend a portable, compact air compressor that is durable and quality made? I know there a many out there on the market, and I'd like to start carrying one but I don't have much experience with owning one of these. For portability, I'd like it to come with it's own case and easily power up via the battery or cig lighter, is there one out there that most here would recommend? I'm running 33 inch Toyo Open Country MT's on a 2017 TRD-OR.

With air compressors you get what you pay for, spend the money and buy a decent one from a good name like Viair.

The only reason I got the smitty was the price at the time....it is a rebranded product and they are identical.

It’s a good unit and airs up tires pretty quick. Decent quality but like all compressors it will get hot doing 4x35’s

Speaking of identical, the hose fittings are some weird metric size and the hose sucks as does the tire chuck.

I cut the hose and fitted 1/2” quick connects and made my own hose. Using the tire filler with gauge that came with my arb.

Speaking of....does anyone make a tire chuck with gauge that is accurate? I’ve had several and the built in gauge is always off by 10-15 psi???

 

Looking for options too and might look into the smittybilt version.

 

Sounds like you are asking for occasional useage which the Viair is probably a decent option. I guess I'm not the only one with a floating gauge but I plan to connect to a small manifold anyway. Details on the quick mod I did so far here.

Viair 400p for probably close to a decade. Comes with everything you need and has the alligator clips to run off of your battery. Never had any issues with it. It has always worked every time I needed it.

 

Another vote for Vair (88P) here. I like that it connects directly to the battery (although even on the cheapy's I cut-off the cigarette lighter plug and put on a set of Alligator clips). The Vair is also rated for 100% Duty Cycle, which some (/most) of the others in this category are not. Fair warning though, it's still slow. My off-road car has 33" tires in the rear, 31" in the front and the last time I used my Vair to re-fill my tires from 20 PSI to 40 it took ~40 Mins.

 

MasterFlow MF1050 and variants is also a popular setup.

 

I went with this air chuck. Just tested it out a couple days ago. It was pretty accurate compared to the TPMS on the dash. Within 1psi.

I can also vote for Viair. I had a 400p for a while. Worked every time I needed it. The things I disliked were having to dig it out and hook it up when I needed to use it and how hot it got. So I swapped it out for an ARB twin. Always hooked up. Just push a button and plug in the air line. Good to go.

BTW, your engine compartment is toooo clean..

 

It's a lot easier if you remove the air filter box. Just a couple bolts there and pull. Then route the cables along the firewall with everything else. Hardest part is popping a wire through for the button to turn it on. Unless you just service mount it somewhere under the hood.

 

viair300p is a good median - not too expensive and fills up your tires pretty quickly for 33s
it also comes with a carrying bag which is nice

CO2 is the way to go. Either something like Power Tank sells or some thing like I did.
