    Ok, a little background. '06 Tacoma, V6, Auto, 4WD, 109 kmiles.

    I'm doing the 100k service.....yeah I know....I'm a bit late.

Drained and dropped pan without trouble. Filter came out without issue. New filter, gasket and pan installed without issue.

When I drained the tranny, about 3 quarts were collected. Upon refilling with 3.5 quarts, running the Temp Check for fluid level......nothing drained from the Check plug. o_O Ok, so I pumped the remainder of the gallon into the tranny. Figuring it was a little short with the new filter. Ran the Temp Check and fluid check again......nothing drained from Check plug.o_Oo_O

My question is to confirm the location of the Fill plug. Its a 24 mm hex. Located on the passenger side of the tranny, up high near the rear of the tranny close to the heat sheild for the 2nd Cat on the passenger side. Is this the correct location?

I have previously changed fluids in the Xfer case and front Diffy. I know the location of those plugs. I'm pretty sure I've got the correct plug. But.....I've pumped in a gallon of ATF WS with nothing coming from the Check plug in the AT Temp Check condition.

Although, I did take a short test drive. Shifting is smooth and positive. Actually, better than before the work. Could the torque converter have been low before the work and is consuming the "extra" fluid.

I'm puzzled. I'm thinking I need to add 1-2 more quarts.

BTW, a metal paper clip works very well to jump the OBD2 pins #4 & #13

There have been reports they came from the factory with low ATF levels. Check this video to make sure you are using the proper level check hole.

    Thanks.

Yes, I'm using the proper check hole. The plug has the word "Check" stamped on it with a 5 mm hex socket requiring an hex (allen) wrench. Inside the pan there is a short standpipe at that plug location. The other plug on the bottom is a 14 mm hex plug, this is the drain.

Can you confirm the location for the Fill plug??

I have reviewed those vids and links. Thank you. These detail the process very well.

I assume the tranny was short on fluid. I believe I'm pumping the fluid into the proper fill hole. (From post #1: Its a 24 mm hex. Located on the passenger side of the tranny, up high near the rear of the tranny close to the heat sheild for the 2nd Cat on the passenger side)

Please confirm the fill hole location. Otherwise, I'm pumping a butt load of fluid into something.

you are filling from the correct location . Truck must be running in park as you fill waiting for the fluid to seep out the check hole in the pan with proper temperature .

@gearcruncher . Thanks for confirming the fill location. Yes, checking when AT Temp Check light is On with truck idling and in park.

Well, looks like I'm off to Advance Auto to pick up more fluid. Think I'll grab 3 quarts. I can always return unopened quarts.

I'd rather over-fill then drain off, then run thru this exercise multiple times. I've already been through it twice.

A little follow up to place a bow on this.

I bought 3 more quarts of Valvoline ATF MaxLife (labeled as compatible with Toyota WS). Added an additional 2.5 quarts to the tranny. All told, the transmission consumed an 3.5 quarts more than the 3 quarts I drained. Total 6.5 quarts. Apparently, the fluid was a bit low. The truck shifts so smooth, its like butta'. Barely feel the shift points. Need to be looking at the tach to know for sure.

Anyhow, Thanks for the help and confirmation of the Fill plug.

A small bit of maintenance was done while adding the 2.5 quarts. The heat shield at the 2nd Cat on the Passenger side had torn through its bolt. A book full of bad words plus a 1/4" fender washer firmed up the heat shield to kill an odd rattle.
