Funny how Subaru can continue to sell their entire line of vehicles that "consume" oil. Not normal for Toyota though.

I had just shy of 300k miles on my 2001 4.7 tundra, and it never touched a drop of oil. So far almost 5k miles on my 3.5 v6 2020 tacoma...checked the oil a few days ago...still up to the high line on the dipstick. These toyotas are not like gm trucks where adding a qt every 1k miles was considered normal.

112 kmiles, I6, Chevy Trailblazer.....no oil consumption that is noticeable.

Take it to the dealer. Let them diagnose and fix. Something isn't right.

    You have an issue.

I've got 90k on my 2016 and have never needed to add oil between oil changes.

Indeed - do NOT let them tell you a qt in 1200, 1500, 2000 or whatever miles is normal and fine. I have a feeling they will try that at first. Hope not.

I’m going to be the odd ball here and say. I would definitely make sure it’s known that the oil is low or being consumed with the dealer and make sure it’s written that you serviced it there and they had to add oil. Most mfg have an allowable limit if consumption, VW was almost 2qts between oil changes before they would do any further documentation, they just noted it. Mopar/Jeep on their early 3.6l was 2.75qts. IIRC Which was crazy

I would say because your miles are so low that it could just be the engine breaking in. Or maybe the tech added 5qts and not six?

I just checked the oil in my Tacoma a few hours ago, its got 4200 miles on the oil since I last changed it. It is still on the full mark. This is my 4th toyota truck, none of them have ever used ANY oil between oil changes. EVER.

My mom has one of the Camry oil burners. What toyota will probably do if you complain, is make you pay for an oil change. They will fill it to the full mark on the dipstick. Then they will silicone the hell out of your oil fill cap, your dipstick, your oil drain plug, and probably do something to your oilfilter to make sure it doesnt get moved. They will tell you to come back in as close to 1000 miles as possible, and then they will check your oil. If its less than 1 qt low, they will tell you its within specs. If it is over a qt low then they will address it. And then they will let you clean up all the silicone mess. They wont. By the way, they keep finding ways to screw my mom on that oil burner. When I check it at 1000 miles, its over a quart low, when they check it, its "within specs".

In my experience as a professional mechanic, most Japanese vehicles just don’t burn much oil. Every engine HAS to burn some oil because there are tolerances, moving parts and things happening inside the engine (obviously I overly simplified it). Next are American cars, generally don’t burn much but it can be hit or miss. And then euro cars, honestly new or old, big engine or little...if you’re adding 1 quart every 2k miles I’d say that’s perfectly acceptable.

But to reiterate what others have said, while I wouldn’t worry much about being a quart low every 3-4k miles that honestly seems like a large outlier for these engines, or any modern Japanese vehicle. I’d definitely get it looked at and documented, make sure you’re topping up with the correct spec oil and see how it goes. Honestly nothing should need “breaking in” but just see how it goes, maybe by 10-15k miles it’ll subside but again, I agree, 3-4k to be a quiet low seems quite often for our trucks.

    Keep us posted!

Well, another case of not sharing the results for the good of the order.

Two posts on a serious topic and bails before sharing the results from Toyota. :annoyed:

Definitely something wrong. I have a 2019 with 7600 miles and the oil consumption is zero.

No oil burners in my Tacoma stable, 01, 11, 13, and 17 none ever used a drop of oil. I'm not sure of what the lemon law is but I'd be investigating. Was thinking about some of the horror stories you read here; what better place to rant?? Some very legit rants and unhappy customers for sure. But I have no idea of the numbers but what does the Tacoma sell next to the closest competitor? 2:1 ? In any manufacturing theres bound to be a bad one in the batch. Edit, I seen another post about all combustion engines use some amount of oil and I agree, just any of the Tacomas I've owned have so little oil consumption....1/16" on the dipstick at oil change intervals.
