Lower Ball Joints Mevo or Moog?

I did a few searches, but most threads were either old, or got derailed pretty quickly. Which ball joints do most of you use? I'm looking at the Mevotech TTX or the

$24 Moog K80827 Front Lower Suspension Ball Joint for Toyota Tacoma

Moog K80827. The TTX claims to be heavy duty, and the Moog has some interesting design features (low profile boot, "gusher" bearing ) but i haven't heard great things about Moog otherwise.

Any opinions?

A few years ago I went on an extensive hunt to find the OEM as they seem to last the longest IMHO. I found them but ToyMoCo has them locked out from purchase at U.S. dealers so you have to import them which is super easy.
I have purchased maybe a dozen or so now and have done my own LCAs on my Tacos as well as others. The part number is 43330-09510 and you can get here:

Thanks, I'll take them into consideration, though I'm also not convinced OEM is always the best, otherwise we wouldn't be upgrading all sorts of other things. I know everyone here likes to champion OEM, but we're also always "upgrading" with aftermarket parts.

 

I’m pretty sure you can find better ball joints (greasable, etc.) but the problem is finding better complete LCA assemblies.

Pressing your own is out of reach for a lot of shade tree types... so the complete assembly becomes the only option.

I think THAT is where the confusion comes from.

Maybe find a shop that could press in new, quality after markets into your OEM LCA?

I’m stuck in the same boat, my driver side Ball joint is leaking and I’m looking at options.

 

I'm able to press them out/in. Have you ordered from that company before? What was shipping like?

Go to Napa auto and purchase the Sankie/555 joints. They are what Toyota uses, but less expensive.

Thats kind of why I don't trust any of that. No offense Texoma. I've heard probably 4 different ball joints that are "the same as OEM" Could very well be that toyota buys from multiple vendors. I know in the CNC machining world, a lot of tool manufacturers do that.

@Texoma , as far as the Sankie/555 joints, NAPA's website only lists multiple different NAPA branded joints, one of which is obviously a re-branded, double priced Mevotech. Even has TTX in the part number, like the Mevotech.

 

I used the Mevotecs but had I known that I could have gotten my hands on OEM ones I would have done that- my reasoning: my LCA’s needed replacing due to the adjusters being frozen in 3 of the bushings... that was at 180(ish)k and the ball joints were FINE (OEM)

edit: not saying the Mevos aren’t going to hold up- they look badass so maybe they really are.

 

Back in the 1970's Moog was the go to brand, I do believe Moog has gone China mfg I have heard of several with worn new joints in short time after install.

 

Maybe they stooped carrying the ball joints. Still have their tie rods though.

 

Mevos are fine. We use them quite frequently at the shop I work at and have a very VERY slim comeback and ultimately return rate on the ball joints.

I currently run Mevo tie rods and they have been going just fine since I put them on. Actually I have not touched my alignment since initial install.

 

Been looking for complete LCA’s for the same reasons - not a heavy duty need for oem with how light my truck is and the fact it’s in the best climate for longevity - I have my 98 to beef up and focus time and money on so this is just a go getter. So far moog is the option I’m considering at $110 a side roughly free shipping on Prime.

Moog K80827. I forget where I bought them.
So far they work and fixed a clunk. Seems nice that they're greaseable. But the zerk is at a 45deg angle so I don't know if it's accessible normally like you'd expect with a zerk.
It almost looks like it needs to be unbolted again just to gain room to grease it. Guess I'll find out next time if I try to grease it in 5k or later miles.
Didn't grease it now because I assume a new part from the factory came with grease already in it.

Am not overthinking it. If it fails I can install another brand whenever.

 

I had a bad experience with that brand for inner/outer tie rod ends on my 3rd gen 4Runner. Those '555' inners were sloppy after 20K miles of daily driving. I went back to OEM parts, that was 3 years and 30K miles ago and they're still nice and tight.

 

oem take offs look on CL, offerup, forums there are low mileage out there if u look

 

New trend is no zerk fittings and non-serviceable. I find the boots too loose on most aftermarket balljoints and most lead to premature failure.

I'd rather have oem or moog, non-greasable now. I just installed a set of upper control arms from moog and they were closer to OEM style ball joints due to the design of no zerk.
