At some point I'm going to need a battery, fortunately not immediately since I have a mystery to solve.

    The OEM battery measures 10"L x 6 7/8" W x 7 7/8" H to the top of the posts.

It clearly says group 24F. Made for Toyota by Johnson Controls.

It does not fit the tray super tight, there is perhaps 1/4" extra space in W and L but no more. There is apparently no leeway as far as height to the top of the case.

I want a battery to fit this mounting system without a lot of dorking around.

The BCI battery charts I find online generally say 10.75" Length for group 24F. The batteries I find listed for sale as 24F that give dimensions claim 10.75 to 10.9 inches and clearly if they actually measure that they won't fit in this tray.

What are you guys finding? Is the Toyota battery some kind of bastard size? Isn't a group 35 the actual item I need?

I'm pretty sure a 24F is what you want. I think the base measurements (10 x a little less than 7) you took are very close to the 24F batteries that are in my Tacoma and also in my Lexus. The measuments at the top of the battery are a bit larger, closer to 10.75 like you found in the BCI chart. Again, I'm pretty sure any 24F will fit your Tacoma.

I stopped at an O'Reilly's just because I was passing by.

    I measured a group 24R since they didn't have a 24F.

The length at the base was 10.25, exactly as it says on the BCI chart.

I've yet to measure a 24F, just due to not being out and about much.

I agree that because there is a 24F in there now, one should fit but I intend to verify.

Industry standards seem to vary on many products.

Just because something cross references, does not mean it will fit.

    I'll report when I measure a 24F with a non-Toyota label on it.

I hear a lot of complaining here about 27F fitment in the 4.0L, but in my opinion, 24Fs are pretty much the same.
