One thing that doesn’t makes sense about this, outside of seeing if you have water in your diff, is that the gear oil does not actually come up past the fill hole in the diff. This will definitely show you if there is water floating ontop of the oil in the diff though, if that is a concern.

I remember someone made "clear plastic diff covers" for Jeeps back in the day, but they'd always crack since those Dana axles flex so much with that big opening. It was cool seeing inside there, but dirty gear oil looks pretty disgusting too.

 

The oil sits just below if you fill it up correctly. With a flashlight shining threw the glass it would be more than sufficient to see the color or consistency of the oil.

 

The glass will get pretty distorted as the gear oil splashes on it while you are driving and it’ll make it hard to see through the glass into the diff.

Maybe they thought that through and it’ll work great. Post up a picture when you get them installed.
