I second what some others have said-a good holster goes a long way. I'm also not a fan of putting the gun in a different place on your body for different situations (cross draw, appendix) and absolutely against pocket carry due to lack of retention and trigger coverage.

I think carrying without retention or without a loaded chamber are both preparing for disaster, but people will do it.

My policy is I take entire rig off my belt if I'm going to be driving for several hours. It gets jammed between the seats and center console, which keeps it in the same area of my body where it always is. The fit is tight enough that the gun will come out of the holster if I draw sharply. I'm not a fan of attaching a holster to the vehicle. I do have a holster bolted to my tractor though.

I agree. Hell, none of the old laws would, either. The laws keep honest men honest, but allow law enforcement to charge those who violate it. It's like that old axiom about how every safety label is a result of a stupid person, such as the "Do not attempt to stop chain with genitals" label on a chainsaw. This law, like those safety labels, is a result of people doing stupid, or ill-thought out behavior, and it affects the rest of us.

On my 1st gen I had an older version of Maxpedition's Sneak stuck to the side of my shifter console (the original version didn't have the spare mag loop). Some adhesive Velcro on the side of the console and the holster was stuck to that; easy to remove if not needed or wanted and it worked with essentially any handgun. I've never gotten around to mounting anything on the current truck and I've had it since '06. If I remove it while driving I just stick it in the center console. There's a lockbox under the seat if I can't take the gun with me for some reason.

Been meaning to post in this thread. I couldn't find a solution that was low-profile, right-hand position, and avoided drilling or adhesives, so I designed a steel bracket to mate with the factory 3rd-gen seat. It utilizes a Safariland QLS fork and a Ragnarok holster. If I am leaving the truck unattended I just pop the holster off and it looks pretty benign.

...I wanted right-hand seat position because this is the quickest position to draw from. It mimics where a right-handed person would naturally reach and maximizes the likelihood of retention if a 3rd party tried to enter through the door (e.g. a carjacker). One of the unanticipated benefits is that it slides with the seat, so my wife can drive the truck and the holster position remains unchanged.
