Starting 2022, vehicles will be required to have a common protocol that can be accessed by anyone not just the manufacturer/dealer.

One of the big opponents of the is Apple. Apple say repairing you own phone could be a public safety problem. I don't think the law applies to all electronics but RTR was originally everything

 

Well tesla's argument is cyber security, which I agree is a very serious threat, especially with self driving technology. As a general rule, third parties tend to have more lax security than the main companies they are working for. So a third party repair shop could have malware planted in their equipment that will upload malicious code to any tesla it updates.

This is a problem, especially with over the air updates from Tesla, that means a bad guy could also remotely update and/or trigger their own viruses from afar.

They could run the target car off a cliff, cause an accident, or collide an innocent infected car into their intended target, or a hundred other bad things. Very scary stuff.

 

I agree that is a problem but that's not what right to repair is about. If they want to lock down the self driving software that's fine. If they want to disable a vehicle because I change my brake pads, we have a problem. Auto makers can't just say it's impossible and not comply. Tax payers voted in favor of the law so it's auto makers responsibility to find innovative solutions.

 

I get what you're saying, and tesla's lack of repair options and ridiculous service times are not tenable. Right to repair is certainly not about cyber security and isn't intended to address that as a problem. AND it's really only Tesla's problem because of their heavy reliance on and integration of software. Other automakers won't really have that issue.

That being said, just because it's not an intended side effect of the bill passing, doesn't mean those chickens won't come home to roost...

 

So they are giving manufacturers one year? I would assume 2022 MY is already finalized and in tooling.
