Please forgive my ignorance on this topic, but I am looking into getting a hitch mount for a winch and can't find any info with regards to ratings. Most of what i have seen say something like "mount for 8,000-12,000lb winches," but it seems unclear to me if this is simply a statement about the size of winch it can accommodate vs a rating that reflects actual testing about the point at which the mount will fail.

Has anyone been able to find a rating for a winch hitch mount or used one with the language above and not felt sketchy about it?

I am quite happy with the one I built .

I have used it quite often the weak point would be how it is attached to the the winch cradle and the truck cheap hardware can fail loose bolts can shear

The thing is you really don`t want to be lugging a heavier winch around moving it front to back to often unless your young and strong .

Do you have any pictures of your set up?

This is what I'm working with:

Also you weren't exaggerating at all, I'd say I'm young and strong but lugging the winch around is no joke.

I will try and remember to take pictures over the weekend.

I forget just which manufacture I used as a model to work from.

Like any other recovery device a cradle mount is designed for pulling in a straight line the more of a angle one tries to pull the more chances of failures .

Your trying to have a happy medium between strength and weight.

You’re never going to get a true rating on something like this because there are just too many variables, and anybody who gives a rating is BS’ing and using it as a sales technique. Use it for straight line pulls and pay attention to your equipment as it works. Every failure of equipment I have seen when a winch was involved except for one event came from not watching the equipment while it was working and then something broke.
