Wind direction is our biggest enemy. I don’t care what you have on or done, if the wind isn’t in your favor, it’s a 50/50 shot at getting what your after.

Yep, where i used to hunt wind would always swirl, so either animals got used to humans or they'd take off, usually elk were the flightyiest...

Growing up hunting an hour away from home we all stayed in an old house with a wood stove for heat and a wood fired cook stove. My dad and another guy got up every morning at 3:30 and fired the wood cook stove. The whole house and all of us and our clothes smelled like burning wood and grease. Some deer got killed, it’s a wonder anyone seen anything because this was way before scent control was a thing. Oh and half the people there smoked.

I think it’s a gimmick. You’ll never beat a Dears nose. Obviously avoid the scented laundry soap but I just work the wind and try to beat their eyes and ears.

I killed a doe earlier this year out of a group that walked at under ten yards straight downwind of me and I could smell the laundry detergent on my clothes lol. I have had different experiences different times but I think it helps that this spot has a frequently used riverwalk surrounding it so the deer are used to people smell.

edit: I use whatever detergent is cheapest. There is some stuff about in dies standing out to deer too I use the detergent more for that than the scent becuase I always hunt the wind.

On another note I drought my first couple deer to the processor and have processed them all myself up till the doe I shot earler that I quartered out and I kept the back strap and tenderloins after I cleaned them then I brought the quarters, neck, and some trimmings to the processor becuase I didn’t want to spend the time on it. 25$ total for grind and roasts of everything I dropped off. I will be probably doing it this way from now on. It is well worth 25$ to not spend three hours processing and grinding and they pack it up nicer than I could.

I think With my wifes buck I'm going to cut it all up and take it to the processor for summer sausage. Family back home has been wanting some so I gotta send some back. Still have a deer tag and an elk tag in my pocket. Not much time left with in laws coming soon so we will see how it goes. Wife hasn't been feeling well either so I don't even know if ill make it out this weekend.

I smoked a vanilla cigar right before that deer I shot last year came out; granted it was rutty and 300 yards away when he first walked out but... Wind direction lol. I think vanilla is a big attractant anyway because oak trees have vanilan in them and that is why spirits aged in oak barrels often have a slight hint of vanilla

Backpacking into an area and wearing the same clothes for days on end has shown me that scent control is a crock when moving around. I’ve never hunted from a stand so that could be totally different but when I’m moving I’m sweating and that obviously smells. Wind direction is key as you can’t beat the wind or an animals nose imo.

I used scent control spray for my first year hunting. Eventually ran out and never bought another bottle. Wind is your friend or your enemy. I usually just wash with regular detergent just a little less than normal. Hang to dry. Spray water proofing spray, tumble dry for 15 minutes to activate waterproofing. Wear to the field the next day.
