Ordered my Nitro 5.29's a couple days ago. Thinking about doing the change myself, as I have done Toyota solid axle diffs before (old Yota's 80's-90's). New on this thread so any tips for me? I have all the tools needed to properly set them up. Thanks for the help!

The blue elocker connector has to be destroyed in order to remove it, get yourself another, theyre only about $20.

A good start on the 8.75 pinion depth shim is 0.082, from there it should be just splitting hairs.

If you're using a solid pinion spacer, you'll have to put the pinion shim under the race, but if you use a crush sleeve, its better under the bearing.

For the front 8" clam, a good start for pinion depth is 0.073, usually the factory shim is 0.0745 and is just a bit too deep.

The factory carrier shims aren't enough to get good pre load and backlash for a paint check and result in being way too loose. I like to add about 0.004 to both sides to start.

Feel free to PM me and we can exchange contact info if you get stuck anywhere.

So, I'm brand new here and I've got a question that hopefully someone smarter than me could answer pretty easy. I'm getting a brand new 3rd gen Taco pretty quick here, and the first things I'm doing to it are gonna be a re-gear, a lift, and throwing it up on 285/75r16's. And later down the line I'm gonna be adding on a winch bumper and rock sliders and all that jazz. But what I'm wondering is weather I should go with 4.88 or if 5.29 is the way to go cause of all the extra weight I'll be adding. Thanks in advance everyone!

5.29 if you plan on having a fully built truck, AKA all the armor

4.88 if your just throwing skids and lift and tires on there and no bumpers

    also 4.88 if manual

are you currently running 4.88 on your MT? how much weight are you carrying? for me it’s hard to believe 4.88 is enough for a heavier load for slower non 4lo stuff like parking lots and hill starts

Yes 4.88, I haul heavy steel loads a few times a month, but not regular gear. 4.88 if fine. That said, I wouldn't hesitate to run 5.29 if constantly loaded. With the lower geared MT (vs AT) top speed will be limited and you could take off in 2nd with 5.29,

Thank you sir, and it's gonna be an automatic. So 5.29 seems to be the consensus! Thanks for the help!

Anyone else here could back me up that going to 5.29's would limit your top speed? @Hooligans perhaps be interested to know.
I know various factors could affect top speed such as temperature, fuel type, mods, airbox, air to fuel ratio, wheel size, tire size, truck make and model, lift if any, armor or gross weight, aerodynamics, etc.
All I know for certain is that for my mostly stock truck with 5.29 gears from ECGS, and 33s on 17" wheels, I cannot go faster than 79mph. I am mechanically limited by the gears in my diff. I could cruise at 78mph at 2900 rpms on 6th/auto.
Some people here say they could go 90 (unbelievable), and some say 75 to 80. Regardless of what the real figure is, re-gearing will never give you stock speed. I clearly remember taking my truck to 120mph on stock once on my trip to Mammoth with friends and gear in the bed.

My pre assembled ECGS clamshell and 3rd member show up tomorrow, so I plan to install them after work. Anything in particular to look out for when removing either from the truck? I keep seeing on 2nd gens the rear locker has to be moved when removing the 3rd member, but cant recall seeing anything in the 3rd gen. I am going to attempt to unbolt the brake lines from the axle housing and hope they reach enough to pull the axles out without disconnecting them from the wheel cylinders. I'll be using a lift at work, screw stands, trans jack, etc...

My truck topped out at a recent trip around 92 mph (5.29s and 35s). This is the same speed my truck governed out on stock tires.

So what could be wrong with mine then? How could there be a delta of +12mph or more. My truck is exactly the same as it was in this picture today. If anything, i only reduced weight, no armor, no stock bed cover, no ground effects. Only weight on truck is unsprung weight from 285s, wheels. 5.29s from ECGs.
