Finished installing the nalgene washer bottle and wiring up the pump last night. For the first time in nearly 2 years I have working washer sprayers which is nice.

Weekend before last I was loading up the crawler and blew a hydro assist line... I'm lucky it was in the driveway and not on the trail since I didn't have a spare.... I made a last minute decision to take the Tacoma despite telling myself I was no longer driving it til I get around to the rear axle swap.

It did OK on Spring Creek but it felt like I was using the front locker way more than necessary... I chucked the C clip that holds the drive flange into the rear hub. I'm not sure if the axle tube is bent, the flange the spindle bolts to is bent, or what but I'm guessing something isn't straight and is keeping the hub loaded... That would also explain the axle seals toasted and the shaft I broke at the hub as well.

taco spring creek last run.jpg diamond drive flange.jpg

I'm pissed that I've let this slip for so long and I've been looking at what I need to swap this sterling rear in. My initial plan was to keep my current suspension setup and focus on doing the front up well. Then I started thinking I could do Chevy 63s in the rear when i do this axle swap. Then I was asking @esxcli about his setup and started thinking maybe I should just commit to the 4 link.

I want video of that axle getting tossed in the shredder at the junk yard! Or better yet being lowered into a vat of molten metal like the terminator.

Yeah, that seems like the most ideal route performance wise. I didn't budget the extra cost to do the rear with links up to this point, though.

If I swap it in and keep my current leaf springs I don't even have to buy new shocks lol. I figured I would do that, set the front up nice, and then redo the rear in a couple more years.

Just be sure to budget a bunch of extra time/cost in. Coilovers are hard to come by right now and steel is priced absurdly. I bet you're an extra 80 labor hours, $4k in parts and 4 months of down time in the shop by going to a 4-link compared to the existing leafs.

I just went through the same exercise linking the front of my truck. I already had the coilover shocks and still spent well over $3k to link it once all the little stuff added up. Ended up taking about 4 months to swap too working nights and weekends on it.

It's been working well enough for the last 10 years of wheelin, anyways..

With the unsprung weight of a heavier axle and wheels and tires I'll probably pull a little more droop out of it without changing the leaves any

Man, looking at wheel options is bleh. I wish I had jumped on the set of 5 H2 wheels that popped up for $150 but a bad relationship talked me out of it and I regret letting that happen. My buddy could have made rings and done the work to convert them to beadlocks...but even if not they're narrow enough to play the poor man beadlock game I've been playing with these yota wheels and 12.5" wide tires.

I will probably order some Battleborn beadlocks. At $120/wheel for a Procomp 17x9 and about $115/ea shipped for a DIY TMI beadlock kit with hardware the $250/ea for Battleborn is a deal.

Yeah, prices have been running away the last year

I budgeted about $200/wheel for new wheels thinking I could get steel wheels for $60-80/ea shipped and DIY beadlocks for about $80/ea shipped as well. Time for the big pain.

Even dodge take off 17s are going for 400-600 a set around here

Thanks for the heads up.. Looks like they are $305/ea for the 17s :(

A little bird told me that Raceline owns Battleborn, I'm wondering if the BB wheels are the rejects

I don't think Raceline owns BB... they may have a partnership, but I don't think so. I mostly say this because they're about 15 min from me in Carson City and last time I was there (before getting the Spyderlocks) they seem to do everything in-house.

Side-note: I have a buddy selling his BB wheels from his 8 lug dmax crawler with 42/14.5/r17s (5 of em) for under 3k if you need a nudge towards the direction of "too fucking big to fail gracefully" :p

That's not a bad deal... I'd be more tempted if I didn't have a set of 41x14.5R17s sitting in the yard already.

The real hangup is that I am unexpectedly moving to a new place and the next couple months are gonna be a little chaotic. That said... I will have more space to actually tackle the Tacoma with once I do get settled
