OEM is plastic.. 4runner was the only one with glass i know of

i will say most aftermarket repalcements for first gens ive seen leave alot to be desired in beam pattern. Ive considered buying new headlights just to bake the lenses off and put them on the factory optic.

Interesting. Does the CAPA certification not really mean anything?

What do you mean - mine still seem (relatively) clear, if a bit dirty in this photo from Sept. ...and if it's the optics behind the plastic that are the key bit, ... I don't follow.

    upload_2020-11-14_22-21-17.jpg

Also, I noticed on RockAuto, this other "style" of headlight, which has some sort of aparatus "in front" of the bulb. It's 2x the cost of the TYC's, but might it be better, light and beam pattern wise?

Dude you're lenes are shit. You can barely see the bulbs haha

here is my truck with one new lens and one original.

That is an additonal cap for the H4 bulb. Remember the light from the bulb is actually coming from the long part not the tip. It don't mean it's better though.

The plan to buy some cheaper lights, then swap the lens is the best idea honestly.

Dang, good you got off the trail. When you said spindle split in half I thought you meant broke in half. Though I've never seen or heard of the ubj breaking like that. Glad to see you survived!

LOL, I guess I'm just used to seeing all the pictures of everyone's "yellowed as shit" lenses from UV, so mine didn't seem so bad. But yeah, I guess they are like your "not new" one.

How hard is it to swap the lens? Is there a writeup somewhere?

I wonder if it would just be better to pay the $350 for two new assemblies. I mean, it's been 20 years on the originals, and I spend $250 on LBJs every year anyway.

Eh I'll let you decide if it's worth it. Seems high to me but have seen plenty spend more on aux lights haha

No write up but you'd basically follow a retro fit write up so look at a few of those. Basically you just heat up the head lights in the oven to soften the glue, then pry them off. Get some new glue for when you put it back together.

Not a hard task, take some time due to baking is all.

Capa is better. But still not up to Toyota specs. But anything is better than yellow headlights

Interesting, that failure seems as common as lbjs in 4 runner groups
