I am planning on buying a 3rd generation Tacoma. I want to know which trim of the 2020 model you believe is objectively better. Obviously there is the price difference, but is the extra money worth the squeeze? Or am I better off saving the money and using that towards mods. If so, do the mods void any of the warranties?

Edit: Thanks for your responses. The mods I would be interested in doing more have to do with cosmetic as opposed to performance mods. In other words, I am more interested in putting a bed rack with a bed tent rather than upgrading the suspension. I may be interested in having a supercharger or turbocharger installed later on down the road. (NOTE: I am not the most knowledgable about all the mods and all that so go easy on me.)

Also, I want a double cab with the 5' bed.

Welcome. Edit your original post to include what mods you would want to do and what you will use the truck for. This will help people respond.

Plus one on your Mods list. If you forsee a suspension upgrade then definitely go with an OR. I myself went with the OR because I wanted a Crewcab Longbed

Offroad. If budget isn't a concern then might as well buy a raptor lol.

OK there are bed tents galore for these trucks because overlanding is a yuppie fad now (vs hippies in volkswagen buses in the 60s).

Supercharger/Turbochager is hideously expensive you are better off buying something with a turbo to begin with.

Suspension you will do eventually if you drive it enough either because you want to lift it, you hate the ride quality or the shocks just plain wear out. Like if you put a big rack and tent on the back then you will want better shocks/springs otherwise it'll wallow all over the road.

Don't buy a white one! You'll thank me after Googling for Toyota White Paint Peeling.

I was 3 years and $11k into mods on my 17 Sport (commercial insurance) before writing it off and only getting 25% value on them. For us folks that have one vehicle for work and play, I couldn’t get personal insurance and get the “full replacement value” option. My plan was to mod the sport till it was generally “like an OR” without first putting out the cash at the beginning, just never thought I’d one day have it taken from me in a crash. Anyway, claims adjuster said if I had originally just got the upgraded truck in the first place with the mods like the OR/PRO the value would have been so much higher. It can get technical here... If what comes on the stock puts you closer to where you want to go with it, consider that your starting point and mod from there.
If you’re wanting to lift the truck without figuring out vibration problems and spending $$$ in all issues that deal with raising, go for the PRO. It at least comes 1” higher from factory and also has the upgraded Fox 2.5 res shocks.

If I was planning on putting all the weight on like you're wanting to do, you would upgrade your leafs, shocks and I’d suggest regearing to 488’s or 529 (https://youtu.be/9DA2M3G7pqs)as appose to a supercharger. Supercharger just wears stuff out and you would find you’d want to regear anyway. Throwing HP at something getting more and more heavy only increases the stress points until it breaks. Everything is connected. You put a powerhouse up front, transmission and diffs have to be considered too.

Question I’ve heard and is tossed around a fair bit, ‘do you get value in spending $10K more for a Pro than an OR or spending the extra $$$ for an OR rather than a Sport’?? Value isn’t just mods. It’s also in the factory build level, what it means to the owner, how rare is it and what the market says.
My 2 cents that may not mean anything but it’s always fun thinking what i will do when my build comes in. :^)

buy an or. put better suspension on it than a pro, ebay pro grill, nice wheels and tires. and still come in cheaper than what they are selling pros for.

i see people all the time spend all that money on a trd pro to immediately change out the suspension and wheel and tire setup. whats the point besides having the "cred" of having a pro

Obviously "objectively better" is predicated upon each individual's needs. For me - we have a horse farm on a river therefore I am often in hilly and muddy/river terrain. I felt I needed a locker. I did not like the hood scoop. I do not like leather seats in my trucks - I put on Carhartt seat covers, due to my farm environment. Many/most will never need or want a locker and many love the hood scoop and a lot of folks love leather interiors. I weighed each option that I needed and wanted and made a value based decision. My advice to take your time and not make an EMOTIONAL decision, not unlike MARRIAGE. I'm reminded of the song: "Cheaper To Keep Her" - The difference is IF you make a bad choice here; you can get out of the Tacoma with little financial loss... :ballchain:
    Good luck and be safe.

I’d “settle” on an OR and mod it how you want. What I mean by settle is find one without bling. My OR didn’t come with a few things I wanted and damn sure wasn’t going to finance something I could upgrade after. Bed lights being a stupid simple example. Leather seats being yet another.

Total side note but be neat if we had a carpet delete option.

    Good luck

edit: yep to what the one guy said about white. My 13 was peeling when I sold it.

Sounds like you should probably get an OR and save money for your mods.

Function wise, the only things you get from the Pro that you don't get on the OR is the suspension, a beefier skid plate, and lighter wheels. Otherwise it is the same engine, same tires, same rear end, same locker, same CC. You can make an argument about the exhaust and cold air intake too, but from my understanding that only gains you about 5 HP combined.

The Pro has a few standard features that are available on the OR too. You can also get a better suspension, the TRD Pro wheels, and a better skid plate as well after the fact for the OR. It's up to you to decide if it is worth the extra $2-10k to step up to the Pro. In my opinion, your money is better spent on the OR.

I haven’t been in a position of flat out being denied warranty “because of a mod” because I didn’t have my truck scheduled in for service BUT I went to Cochrane Toyota for some service work that would have required warranty work and the service advisor showed me a form he must fill out before warranty work is done and one of the questions asked is “is the truck as stock from the factory?” If the answer is “no” then your fighting yourself out of a hole. I was told I had to remove ALL of my mods and put the truck back to factory for warranty work to be done. This obviously wasn’t an option and the truck wasn’t scheduled in.
I know there’s laws that make the dealership have to prove the mod created the problem but that’s where debate comes in and you’re in that hole.

Agree with everyone else here. If you are enthusiastic about modifying I think an OR makes the most sense. If you’re chasing cosmetics you can get the Pro grille and garnish for ~$150 on eBay, BHLM the headlights if you’re into baking or have @no vtec 4me do it for you, and then jump over on the hood swapping and trading thread and see if you can find anyone trying to swap a sport hood for an offroad hood and you’ve pretty much got a “pro”.

Factor in wheels, tires and lift for an additional $2-3k and you’ll likely have a better setup than a stock Pro.

And if you’re making payments you could likely find an OR for $10,000 less than a Pro, and if arbitrarily you’re making $500/month payments, that means you’ll own your truck ~2 years sooner than you would a Pro.

But if money is no object, then you can take my advice with a grain of salt.

    good luck

Ok, you need an option from a PRO owner to balance it out here. Just kidding. When I added all the options that I wanted in a new Tacoma the price difference was not much between the OR and the Pro, and knowing I was not going to do any suspension mods, I chose the Pro. Plus I got the AG which I really like. Like I always say, jack them up mod them out but you will not get the mileage a stock one will get

OR here as it fits my needs (and my budget) very well. I did look at a Pro but decided to pass on it. What was funny is even the Salesman argued against my buying the Pro. First time I’ve ever had a Salesman do that.

Every time I optioned up an OR or sport (wanted advance tech package for the leather and cameras), I found myself within about $1500-2000 of a Pro.

Knowing that, for the difference I was getting the Fox suspension, factory lift (aka warrantied lift in my eyes), TRD exhaust, along with all the vain stuff I wanted deep down (hood skeuuup, Bro grill) made the pro a reasonable choice for me.

    Both are great trucks.

I wanted a king bed so I had no choice but if it came in a long bed I probably would have bought one

If you’re going to do any suspension mods it seems like the pro is a waste of money.
