Does anyone have experience with k&n washable filters?

My wife and I are in the planning/ building stages of a 2 year Pan-American road trip and we're looking into washable filters. I've heard a few stories online about the oil in the filters causing sensor issues in other trucks.

Anyone have issues on 3rd gens?

AFE has a dry lifetime filter. Used it on my 03 Tundra for a decade and cleaned it by smacking it on the tire at every oil change @ 10k miles. Dont use oiled.

I’ve had one on my 17 Sport for 3 years, 134,000klms and have oiled and cleaned it from day one. I’ve NEVER had issues of oil coating the MAF sensor.
I also would always as a maintenance habit, pull the MAF sensor and spray it off with MAF cleaner at least once a year anyway and it never looked coated in oil.
The other thing I would do after changing my own engine oil is take in a sample to Metrotech in Calgary and have the oil analyses done. Dirt contamination through the K&N never showed above normal numbers. I’ve run K&N filters on all my vehicles for 35 plus years since high school so I know not to over oil.

I prefer Green Filter over K&N. Always made a slight difference in my performance cars I have previously owned. I have a 1st gen trd filter so it takes a round filter. I put a sock pre-filter over it. That way I rarely have to even clean and oil it. I just wipe off the pre-filter sock cover.

Yeah that’s user error in almost all cases but nobody like to be wrong so they blame the filter.

Yea you gotta really hose the filter to cause MAF issues. You just need to lightly spray it so it colors the element

Used k&n on my previous vehicles and never had issues. I use oiled trd filter on my 3rd gen, no issues at all.

    never had issues with them

that's an end user result of over-oiling the filter after cleaning it

I know on Fords it’s very easy to damage the MAF with a K&N, even if it’s never been re-oiled. If I recall there was a series of lawsuits about that a few years ago. I used to run K&N’s in all my off-road toys but now I’ve stopped using them.

You may want to look into a Donaldson-type air filter, it’s what large trucks and tractors generally use. I installed one on my off-road car before I went to Moab last month and I was very impressed with how it performed! When I was there the area hadn’t seen rain in a month or longer so all the trails I ran were very dusty. Despite that the outer filter showed some minor staining, the inner filter was nearly dust-free and my intake was clean, which it never used to be when I ran a K&N with a foam pre-filter on that same car.

Leave them for the FnF crowd. If I were planning the Pan-am I would be trying to minimize complications not add more..

Parts availability/ space. 80k miles through many countries, I'd prefer not to have to track down a filter for a third gen Tacoma in Ecuador. And space is limited so I'm not going to carry a boatload of filters with me.
