Here's my $.02 and it doesn't matter one way or the other.

I've shot deer with a compound bow, a crossbow, a pistol, shotgun with buckshot, shotgun with slugs, muzzle loader, and a rifle. You can't eat the horns and the meat all tasted the same.

Let's don't worry about what who shot what with what, congratulate them and be happy

looks like you hit some gut or liver. Did you smell the blood? It looks quite lethal if you let it lay for an hour or two.

I'm thinking it was it back a bit. Look like liver blood to me. White hairs are from the exit?? Like others have said, back out quietly, go eat breakfast and come back in a few hours.

I smelled it and it just smelled like deer meat to me. Kinda has a distinct smell in my opinion, but it is hard for me to smell with my nose running because it is chilly for Mississippi. Some blood splatters looked a little gritty like it could have gotten into guts but I didn’t feel around in it. White hair is on the exit side. No obvious stomach matter that I saw if there was some it was mixed with the darker blood.

I walked out on a lever that is cleared and looked up at one point and there was a big fork 70yards from me side in the open. I tried to get off to the side but when I was almost behind a big tree he got weary and turned around. Hopefully I was quiet enough. He is somewhere in this pic.33C4B6E1-8F55-4ACC-B97B-26B0BD771CE8.jpg

Years ago, when I was really into flyfishing, I would typically head downstream a 1/2 mile or so and work my way up. I would place beers along the way for fishing my way back upstream. Goals. They're important.

The gritty is the gut/ stomach. Its bleeding pretty good so i wouldnt bump it. After 1hr is safer 2 is better. Just follow blood trail slowly, you could have an arrow ready if you come up on it, and its still alive and maybe have a chance at a second shot, if its not dead.

Id lean towards a fatal wound on yours with the amount of blood.

If there is any possibilty it was liver/gut hit, I would wait 4 hours. Depending on where in the liver it can take a while to bleed out. Hard as it is, better to wait then to bump it an lose it.

Yea i have always been told by the old timers that if you hit guts its a 4 hour minimum wait to go looking. When my buddy's dad shot that 8pt with his crossbow we waited 5 before looking and he was dead but he was still extremely warm so he hadnt been dead long. I think he hit it at 730 and we didnt start looking til nearly 130. But because we waited he was only 50 yards or so from where he was shot

A gut shot deer is a dead deer, just a matter of how long it takes him to die. If pushed or pressured they can go a long time, maybe a good blood trail or maybe no blood trail. Personally I would give him at least 6 hours.

Waited 3 hours and should have waited longer. Tracked 200 yards and bumped him. He was hurt but we backed out. Couldn’t get another arrow in him. Still bleeding I asked for a dog in a Facebook group. We got within 15 yards of him in his bed before he ran. I thought he would die by how much he opened up. 374C0062-954F-4FBE-AB35-D252A21DE0E9.jpg69FC4D13-B6F5-4294-9EBC-97C674D049CE.jpg

Be careful, I've bumped them like that before never to be seen again.

Don't see too much blood if he was bedded for 3 hours....internal bleeding or not that bad?? Give it time and then find him - GOOD LUCK!!!

He run or walk?? Level ground or uphill or downhill?? Over obstacles or around them??
