Any sport owners regret not getting an offroad?

I am glad to hear your guardian angels were watching over you, and you walked away unscathed.

I would have to ask what type of owner are you? Historically, have you modified your past trucks/vehicles? If so, how much have you typically spent in modifications? Also, how much do you actually go off-roading/rock crawling/wheeling/Overlanding? Or, do you just use your 4 wheel drive when the roads are snowy?

The reason I ask is this; if you regularly modify your truck, and have no issue spending money on your truck, you can get either model, and add the benefits of the model you didn't get.

Example 1: Buy an Off-Road with the crawl control and electronic locking rear differential. Then, get your fenders color matched and add a Sport hood. Boom! You now have a Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Sport.

Example 2: Buy a Sport and then add an ARB rear Air locker (The only issue with this route is the fact that you cannot add crawl control later).

I think the best bet is to buy an Off-Road, add a Sport hood, and get your fenders color matched, if so you desire.

If the ride quality of the Sport still entices you there are plenty of suspension options out there to ensure you get exactly what you want.

I recommend having a consultation with Ben at Filthy Motorsports before making any suspension decisions. He is an absolute guru, and the money you spend in the consultation up front will save you tons of money, and pay huge dividends on the back end with getting the exact type of ride quality you're looking for.

I drove a 2017 SR5 for four years. Working every snow day and snowboarding every snow day I wasn’t working. Never got it stuck and that’s even in 2ft of snow. Pulled many stuck people out though!

Just traded that lease in for a 2021 TRD Sport Premium Package and still don’t regret not having OR. I love everything about the Sport. I enjoy it’s hood scoop, color matched parts, and stiffer suspension (curvy roads) every single day. Never once have I needed or wished I had the OR features. One day I’ll get stuck I’m sure, due to ice, not snow and nothing works in ice anyways.

I carry recovery gear like straps and shovels and traction pads on snow days, but have never used them for myself, only others. If I need them, they’ll work for me though! I want a winch!

If I were off roading, overlanding, crawling, and shit I’d get the OR 100% though. Dirt roads, rain ruts, and snow on roads is all I’m on.

 

No regret getting the sport here either. Haven’t gone off road yet in roughly two years of ownership. One day I will.

 

I got the Sport Because of the deal I got on it! "No Regrets", because I Ripped the entire suspension out anyway!
Would have felt bad about doing that if it wasn't a Sport!, Lifted it 4", All ICON and Maxtrac...and put 285/70/17(33's) on it and I'm Happy!

Welcome to the forum, sorry about the accident! Now to answer your question...yes they all regret getting a sport over an off road but they are too proud to stay it so they just suffer in silence

 

I used my locker the first time I took my Tacoma off road, so I am glad I had it. It has come in handy a few times, but if you don’t go on anything more extreme than a fire road, you won’t really need the Off Road model, especially if you like the look of the scoop and color matched flairs. Get what makes you happy! If you decide later down the road you need a locker, you could always add one.

Probably. Just saying if you don’t need the locker and like the way the Sport looks, then go for a Sport.

Nope. No ragrets because I saved ~$2,700-2800 by going with a 4wd sport (which is rare) and I’ve owned the truck for almost 2 years and have yet to engage the 4wd. Yeah the off-road might have a diff, slightly better suspension for offroad, and crawl control, but I legit would never need any of that. I’m going to replace the shocks at 40-50k to anyway with aftermarkets when I put a suspension lift, so the off-road suspension is negligent. My bone stock 4wd sport w k02s right now can get through any mud, harsh terrain. It’s my daily, so I’m not destroying it on trails either.

 

I am in the same boat. The sport was the only configuration for the exact truck that I wanted. If I was Canadian, my only option would have been the OR in which case my first mod would have been a hood swap.

 

You should be engaging your 4wd every month for 10-15 miles for proper lubrication. Just an FYI.

 

I was planning on buying a Sport, found a good deal on a used Off Road so here I am. Don't think you can go wrong with either.

 

No regrets on my Sports model purchase.

Only time I've used 4x4 is from monthly lubrication drives.

No interest in off roading or wheeling. No plans to lift or modify suspension. Love the stiffer suspension from stock set up since 99% is highway driving.

Dont let the internet justify your purchase. YOU and only YOU can convince yourself on the next tacoma purchase and be happy.

I suppose the best answer is no. I don’t regret getting the Sport. I’ve had three of them (two 2nd gens and one 3rd gen). When I bought the latest one I drove an OR just for comparison. Here is what I came up with;
1. I prefer the ride and drive characteristics of the sport.
2. I prefer the look of the sport.
3. My only 4WD requirement is that it be capable in snow and loose sand on the beach. The Sport is more than capable for that and much more.
In the end, just figure out which truck works best for you and then enjoy it.
