They are hard buggers to find at least where I am.

I had good success last week calling in does with a fawn distress call but the rut was t on yet so no bucks followed.

Yeah it's my first season seriously going after them, and I was deployed the whole time I should have been scouting, so I'm really shooting in the dark right now. I just need to get one single clue and it will all start coming together.

Coues deer is the grey ghost, which happen to be a small subset of whitetail

I know I posted this in the other hunting thread but it’s nice to post stuff in local threads and I forgot about this one

Ok let me tell you all a secret....

I started hunting with my uncle 10 years ago at age 28 ( I missed two years because of health issues or other life things)... dad never took me when I was younger and I knew pretty close to nothing. For the last ten years I have been humping up and down the hills of southern Oregon and came up empty. I sometimes would take a full week (9 days) and sometimes only take a 4 day weekend to drive 5 hours down and 5 hours back. Ill be honest I was getting pretty frustrated when my uncle would send me pics of his deer that he got before or after I left. I have seen bucks while walking or sitting but never could get a clear enough shot. Last year I was down here when he shot his deer and helped gut, skin, and butcher his deer. It was the first time I had been around to gut a deer.

Well come down to southern Oregon again this year and been here a week and thinking it was going to happen again and go home empty... until this morning when this nice buck came walking in front of me. POW one shot to the neck and down he went. Gutted my own deer with my uncles help and its now waiting to be butchered.

I’m telling this story because I have worked my ass off to try and bag one and it finally happened and I couldn’t be prouder of myself. Also to give people hope that maybe haven’t shot one yet.

    Cheers everyone!

 You say that so definitively. I’m sure it’s perfectly okay for multiple species to share a nickname. It’s not like it’s their scientific name. Steelhead, Sitka blacktail, Columbia blacktail, cascade blacktail, etc. all share that name from time to time.

Nice work! I started hunting as an adult too; but no one in my family hunts so it's been a lot of self learning. But I joined a hunt camp out east and spent 7 years listening to those old guys every chance I could get...my very first time hunting, I shot a moose (and I'd never even seen one before lol). I feel like I have a lot of ground to make up, and not that many hunting seasons left now I'm in my 40s, but every time out I try and learn something.

This year is my first time hunting black tails and it has been a lot of fun. Of course will be way more fun if I can fill a freezer.

Pretty happy to have punched a tag yesterday. For my first time hunting these guys I will admit I am a little surprised we got him and pretty proud of my first deer ever. Not a monster but one I will remember forever.

Flew home early for thanksgiving and had limited time to hunt so wasn’t passing anything. Neck shot the first deer I saw this morning. Pretty rare that I tag-out opening day! Good luck to everyone else hunting the late season with sticks.

nice, do you often take neck shots with a bow?

I'm going to do late season muzzleloader. Thinking about going for whitetail north of Spokane. It will be the third week camping by myself this year lol. Does anyone else use vacation to hunt??? a dude gets bored after the sun goes down.
