Hello Tacoma enthusiasts. Recently I bought on auction a 2003 Tacoma with 264k miles. I torn into this thing to do some much needed maintenance. The valve cover gaskets leaks an incredible amount of oil and I was going to go right to replacing those while I have the front end apart to repair some cosmetic damage. I opened the intake and noticed some oil which immediately got me thinking about what else I needed to check. I ended up doing some compression testing and these are the results I found. The piston that measures 130 was improved by adding some oil to the cylinder. So now my question is, do I dive into an engine rebuild or does anyone suggest that this be a reasonable condition to drive until it starts blowing smoke? And when that might be by estimate. (Currently runs great, no smoke) I also have not adjusted the valves yet and I’m hoping that may improve the compression ever so slightly but I don’t know how far I want to go without a game plan. Thanks guys all opinions are welcome but hoping there’s some reasonable mechanics with knowledge of engine rebuilds, maybe even on this gen of Tacoma....

130 isn't awful and if its not smoking I wouldn't personally do a bottom end rebuild unless it was pluming smoke.

The low compression could be rings/ring lands or cylinder bore but the problem lies with the cost to machine all parts and cost to replace pistons and rings along with all associated parts.

When its running, try removing the oil cap and see if you hear lots of combustion or if smoke comes out.

I'd start personally by doing a hot injection or seafoam clean. This can loosen carbon off the ring lands and possibly restore compression off the valves etc.

@Bishop84 Thanks! How concerned should I be about the oil blowing back into the intake?

All engines do this, but its to different levels.

I would say if your intake hoses are full of oil or you are smoking badly its time to fix the engine.

You could check your PCV valve and see if its worn, or simply change it for 4$

If its running fine i wouldn't worry about it too much. Just keep checking the oil and see how the level changes over time, that'll help determine if you need to dive into the motor

Thanks, I'll try some seafoam as an experiment. I think my idea is to seal it up the best I can and then watch what happens for the next few months. Crossing my fingers that it shows signs to run strong for a while longer than that. Come time to take care of the engine, should I be leaning towards rebuilding this or swapping it? All I can find are cheap rebuild kits and I feel like as it sits with one wanky cylinder it would out last one of those kits. so where's the best place to buy a kit/ parts and where is a good place to purchase a solid engine preferable OE remanufactured or the equivalent quality?
