All Terrain Tires

I’m all about the Duratracs but they’re not that quiet. My wife recently asked WTF the humming noise was and yeah it was tire noise.

 

I purchased Falken Wildpeaks last year. They don’t have deep tread to begin with and after 25k miles they are shot. I won’t buy them again. Good performance while they lasted though.

 

Nitto, Toyo, Falken if I was buying an AT. Have Wildpeaks on my wifes F150.

 

LOL. Just buy the tire that looks coolest. That’s all that matters if you are buying an AT anyway. AT’s are almost universally mediocre at everything, so just get the one with the cool looking aggressive sidewall rubber.

 

I'm using Yokohama GO15s. Michelins would be my first choice.

 

are u guys running e load or c load? just wondering cuz isnt there a big wieght difference?

 

If I had the choice in the tire I wanted, I'd go with the C. I had Michelin Defenders in load range E on my old T100 and I thought they rode too harsh. They wore like iron, but rode like shit. I still buy Defenders, but not Es.
Of course, you'll get the 'it's a truck, it's supposed to ride rough' comments, but I'm not in that camp. I'd guess those comments are closely followed by the 'my radiator core supports are tearing themselves apart' threads.

I went with the Coopers, AT3 LT 265/75R16 C load. I daily drive it and took a trip from Texas to Montana a few months ago. They are quiet and have done a great job when I do go off road.

The runner up was the Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus, and if they're still in production when new tire time rolls around I might try them out.

 

I just got a set of the Wildpeak AT3W's in 265/70/17 put on last Tuesday, absolutely no complaints so far!!!

Duracraps are great offroad and perform acceptably in the snow, but are hands down the worst performing and noisy "AT" tires i have ever run when on road. E rated KM 2's siped down the middle perform better with a light vehicle like the Taco or an FJ and give a good balance of cost/mileage.

 

Don't listen to this guy he doesn't know how it is in the cold states. For Californians it's always been about looks, never been about performance.

 

How many miles you got on em? I had that exact tire and they were great for the first 15k miles, then traction died off QUICKLY and noise shot up like no ones business. It got so bad i got rid of them around the 40k mark with probably 30% tread left and went Defender LTX M/S's and within the first 100 ft of driving the truck was SO much better.

I’ll wait for your convoluted goat rope explanation on why AT tires AREN’T universally mediocre performers across the board.

In mud you’ll get stuck just as fast as a decent set of all-seasons - if you want real performance you’ll need an actual set of MT’s.

On the pavement AT’s are abysmal when compared to a Quality set of all-seasons. You’ll give give up quite a bit of tire performance both in the dry and particularly in the wet. Siping matters.

Seems to me that wherever-the-heck-you’re-from AT users are the ones choosing Tires for looks and trying to gloss over it with farcical “performance” lipstick arguments.

Defender LTX M/S's work WAY better in everything but harsh off road conditions where only an MT is acceptable. Every single AT tire i have had doesnt compare to the Defender in dry grip, wet grip, icy road grip, light snowy road grip, life of the tire, noise, or rolling resistance.

Icy mtn roads I have no problem getting up in 2wd with the defenders where a brand new fancy AT tire would struggle in 4wd.

 

Honestly just buy whatever tire you want. Everyone has a horror story about one tire brand or another.

Duratracs dont hum too loud
They have done well in mud and snow for me.

 

So OP I just read through all the reply’s and learned that most AT’s are great and most AT’s are crap. It really depends on what “I” have cause “I” have the best. OP let us know what you learned here and what tire you are going to go with based on these brilliant responses. Oh by the way the best and quietest AT tires are the ones I have and they are ........
