Long story short, moving to Denver at the end of January. Will be towing a 6x12 trailer with the taco. I will be coming from Phoenix. Looks like there are two routes, either interstate 70 or interstate 25. Which will be better? I will be pretty close to the max payload and towing capacity on my tacoma. I have newer ko2s and will be picking up chains and kitty litter. I know I will not be winning any races on this trip and plan on splitting it into two days just because I will be towing. So for you locals, which route would you recommend? Both are about 13 hours and similar mileage. I know I will be climbing a bunch, just curious as to which will be easier on the truck.

    Thanks in advance!

Everybody I know who’s made the drive takes 25. Especially in January.

70 is a better drive. Without a trailer.
    So, 25 all day.

I’ve gone both ways. Definitely go 25, especially in December

I lived in flagstaff and now I live in Salida, so the fast route for me is Phx to Flag, Tuba City, Cortez, Durango, Monte Vista, Del Norte, etc.

Way longer than 17-40-I25, but much more prettier.

Google says it is closer, but about an hour longer.

I've never been to Phoenix, but have traveled all over CO, and a bit around the 4 corners areas of NM, AZ, and UT. Glenwood Springs to Denver can be a PITA during the winter on 70. On the other route there could be some snow on Wolf Creek pass between Pagosa Springs and South Fork. But that is only one pass to deal with. And it is more scenic.

I live in Durango and used to work in Denver every other week. In the Summer it's 285. In the Winter it's I25. I was in the ski biz so I drove all possible ways to hit each ski area.

I-25. Raton Pass at the NM/CO border is your biggest obstacle. There's like ten of those on I-70.

Gonna be rocking the hazard lights on the 25. Watch out for a voodoo blue taco with a RTT towing a 6x12 uhaual. It's not ideal. It will be above weight, but it's what I've got and it's one trip.

I'll also being dealing with a cat that HATES car rides so that'll be fun.

That's actually a good idea. Hoping the vet can help with something to sedate him during the drive. Gonna split the trip into two days. He just HATES the car. It's literally a ten minute ride to the vet and he cries the entire time. I hate it. I feel like a bad cat dad but it's literally so he can get his shots and make sure he's healthy. He treats it like I am torturing him.
