If you like MT, vi should be your preferred editor. :)

It is, when I'm on linux/unix boxes. :anonymous:

Or the shortcut way that I like to use. Make sure not currently editing anything, Esc out if you are. Then...

Save and quit = ZZ. Quit without saving = ZQ. Capitals are important, so it is Shift-Z, Shift-Z (or Shift-Q).

Yeah - I thought I could use a manual gearbox with the best of 'em... now I'm not so sure...

Makes me think of this old anecdote...

Back in the day when 5th gears were new; this old guy (he was old back then....) bought himself a new Fiat. He loved it for some 3 years before my friend made him aware that he actually had an additional gear above 4th...

Makes me feel like I am missing something...

This is some background if you're truly interested.

There is a bit of similarity between the MT to AT popularity shift and the shift to WYSIWYG / GUI based text editors. With increased computing power and the advance of tech, particularly 9 and 10 speed AT's which can keep an engine in a narrow powerband and very efficient torque converters, AT's of today are significantly better than AT's from 30 years ago. But there's a certain je ne sais quoi when driving an MT which is similar to that special feeling when using vi (your fingers stay focused on the home row and you don't touch the mouse).

Full disclosure, I use Visual Studio on Windows 10 so I'm mostly bs'ing. But I also fully embrace AT on the minivan (when kids are screaming I'll take all the tech help I can get).

TLDR: vi is cool but the learning curve and plethora of easier alternatives makes it a bit of a relic, not unlike MT to the general population.

I used to sysadmin and still frequently work on linux servers that are headless, so there is no GUI option. You better know your stuff or you'll be left in the dust quickly!

Man, always going right for that kill -9 hmmm?

Yes, being able to make a quick edit in vi is quite comparable to being able to drive any MT without stalling or squealing tires. I consider both to be required skills and I have some hope my two sons will agree and learn.

Ironically, I consider good penmanship to be a waste of time despite how many studies link fine motor skills with brain development. I do watch with awe when someone who has excellent fine motor skills is doing their thing but it doesn't seem like a skill I feel I can cultivate in myself, there's no level of "competent" which I would be satisfied with.

I wish my own thoughts made more sense on these types of skills.

Yeah learning cursive was a colossal waste of my time..

Followed by keyboarding class in HS...

Now i spend all day on a computer and I still rely heavily on autocorrect..

IMG_6039.jpg I've heard conflicting answers from the dealership as to whether non-remote connect/smart-key Tacos still have the ability to receive these Vehicle Alerts notifications - are we shit outta luck?

Is that in the Toyota app? This is what I have in the Notifications section:

My notifications are empty as well, but you'll see the settings for them under Account -> Notification Settings. It's a new app, so maybe they still leave the settings in there even if you have a non-remote connect?

I see it now. Have you tried leaving your hazards on (for example) and see if you get a notification? I never thought to try testing any of that.

Yep, no dice. Most likely isn't a feature but thought I'd check with some other MTs just in case.
