I’ve been watching and taking notes for a while now- figure it’s about time I start posting progress of my build. I have a 2013 Tacoma that we named ‘taco de negro’ since it’s black- so the trailer has been affectionately dubbed ‘con queso’ so we have a black taco with cheese.
I already outfitted with a dual battery system, ran some power lines to the bed and hitch, built a slide out for my ARB fridge, added trailer brake controller- etc. and all of that was preparation for this build.
Frame is 3/16, everything above it is .120 wall. I went with the timbren axle-less setup, with brakes. Found a set of tires that are the same size as my truck, and bought wheels with the same bolt pattern so I only have to carry one spare.
Lots of fun ideas still to try, but wanted to show y’all where I’m at and I will add more as we go.

Subbed and bumped, watching closely as I am going to be attempting a trailer build come spring. Looking good!
What is your box size and what was your reasoning for going 3/16 for the frame instead of .120? I was planning .120 for the frame and something slightly thinner for the rest to save on weight but I also don't plan on taking my truck/trailer anywhere crazy.

I went with 3/16 because I am classically known for over engineering- hell, I almost went 1/4”! I wanted the frame to be stout- and having planned on running axle less suspension- I don’t think I could have gone any thinner without potential for disaster.
I know I will be putting this thing through it’s paces. I used to be really into hardcore wheeling so part of the draw of all of this is getting back on the trail and getting out to places most people won’t go.

Gotcha, completely understand that. I wans't sure how much hardcore wheeling you actually do but I figured if you were doing 3/16 you were either like me who overbuilds everything or you did some pretty crazy stuff. I dont plan on taking my truck/trailer build anywhere crazy and am going solid axle for it so I figured .120 would be good enough. Thanks for the input!

What thickness sheet are you skinning it in?

Partial update- been staying after it lately. Got the walls built, gussets added, fenders widened, hard shell tonneau cover figured out, fold down table mounts, side steps built. This is where we start to veer away from the “Box Rocket” similarities- More to come on the cantilever platform soon...

    Holiday progress update:
Filled the gaps in the tongue with expanded sheet, made some side access doors, built gas can mounts from scratch cuz I was mad about how expensive they are to buy, got the floor welded in, mounted the 13 gallon tank, mounted the kitchen slide outs, and made some hidey holes for rear water quick connects and electric on opposite sides.
Awning is on order and tent pickup is next week- get excited....

Looking sick dude! Are you planning to put any rubber seals on the inside of your side access doors?

Yes- once it's painted I put a 3M rubber or some window insulation in there.

In Minnesota most home made trailers are a one-time registration fee.

Finally made the trip to pick up my tent- and my 270 awning showed up last week too- so it was time for a true winch test! 00769B48-1DB0-458D-A8A8-29EA0C8D5EFF.jpg

Been a busy couple weeks getting everything painted and beginning on final install. Suspension and brakes are in for good, frame is wired, water system is in for good, upper platform is mounted and the lights are wired too. Got the axe abs shovel mounts finished too.
Now we start on wiring the interior and making sure everything works.

    So. Much. Wiring.
But it all came together and with the help of some of my smart buddies, everything miraculously works!
Stoked to put away the wire spools and shrink wrap and move onto the slide outs and kitchen.

Hows the stability of the trailer with the tent up and forward over the tongue like that with weight in it? Does the trailer get a little wobbly at all?

One night we didn't put the 4 landing legs down so it was just on the wheels and trailer jack- and then it was a little wobbly- but with the landing legs down its super solid! The only thing I gotta figure out is when momma and I go down to funky town- there's a squeak in one of the stand up legs that we gotta get to stop! :bananadance:
