I've owned my truck for several years now, and shortly after buying it I noticed a black box shoved up under the dash that clearly isn't factory. I'm assuming it's a remote start. I've found a little bit of information that it's a directed system with a DBALL2 interface. I'm new to this remote start game, and I'm not sure what it all means. I'm not sure if I require the monthly subscription for "smartstart" and use the app on my phone, or if the truck can be started by some combination of the factory key fob.

Today is a day off from work, so I've decided to poke a little deeper. (After nearly 3 years of owning the truck!) Any help would be much appreciated, or if someone can point me in the right direction that would be great too!

It looks like at some point it would have started by pressing the lock button 3 times. That feature no longer works. I might have to bring it to one of their dealers to get re-flashed.

So there are two different pieces, with two different functions

the DBALL2 is a data interface. This piece tricks the truck’s computer into thinking the key is in the ignition. It copies the code embedded in the little chip in your key.

then you have the actual remote start brain, the 4x06. This is sending all the power to all the necessary places to make the truck think you’re turning the key to start it.

these two pieces are most likely still programmed to the truck and are most likely still functional. You’re most likely just missing the remote, and luckily the remote is easy to program.

hopefully, there is a little antenna located somewhere easy to get to? Typically stuck to the windshield somewhere. It will have a blue LED and a button on it

Let me know if you find that

I believe this is it tucked up under the mirror. The LED doesn't seem to be activated but it looks right. It's a little hard to tell in the photo but it does have an LED and a button in it.

That’s definitely it. You most likely just need a new remote. But it’s always hard to know for sure.

with the key in the ignition and turn on (but not cranked, so 2 clicks) press once then press and hold that button and see if the light comes on at all. If it doesnt, we can go from there

The light did turn on. The horn also beeped quickly on the first press and then longer during the hold. The light is now on with the key out of the ignition.

Thank you very much for walking me through this!

Ok. I’d get a viper 7816V remote and program it (takes 5 seconds) and you should be up and running

Thanks! Do you know if there are any remotes that would fit the system that would allow me to keep only 1 key fob? For example, would the 7857V remote work? Is programming still similar or is it more complicated with the other functions?

I'm guessing that I have the 4806V 2 way remote start system, but I'm not sure how to correctly identify.

    You're a real internet hero!

Yeah the 7857v should also work, as long as the lock/unlock functions are actually connected.

judging by your picture, they should be. They are the blue and green wires in the 3pin connector
