I have a Glock 19 Gen4. Love it. My wife is a dead shot with it and she’s not even a fan of them.

glad I stocked up on 9mm FMJ at the last fun show I went to 2 years ago. Checked my stash and all is well. I have a small stash of other popular calibers to use as trade should I need to.

wish I didn’t sell off my M1 Garand and the college fund of a stash of 30-06 but that just means I can finally build my retro AR-15

My carry is a Sig SP2022. I had a G26 but I didn’t like how the short mag and pinkie extension pinched my pinkie. I never could get comfortable with it. That and I prefer a pistol with a decocker. If I were to get another I would most likely Get one of the Springfield XD units

    I think he’s saying:
    • Bigger caliber is better.
    • Wife must shoot what he shoots, or doesn’t shoot.
    • Small caliber worse than no caliber.
At least that’s what I got out of it.

With ammo being in short supply getting a popular caliber might not be the best idea. Wife shots a .380 . I have my 9mm, 40sw and 45acp. I have enough ammo for all. Only because when I at the local store I always walk past the gun area if they have any I buy.
If its there now it may be gone in 5 min.
I've seen people buying 9mm gun and then find they can't get ammo.
I've seen people at the store last week looking for ammo for deer hunting. Sold out. They should've got it last summer.

If you’re lucky, you can catch stock online for 500 rounds. At >$0.80 per for 9mm.

    Sage advice.

To OP, if I had to start all over again knowing what I know, I would start with two 9mm for his & hers. You can find ammo, but it will be expensive. That's just the way it is. Can't reverse the clock and say "shoulda got it sooner". Buy as much ammo that makes fiscal sense for you. Take at least one basic handgun course if you can. If not, you tube videos for tips on stance, grip, trigger control. Safety first. Learn the rules and then get out there and practice, practice and practice.

Can't go wrong with Glock 9mm or Springfield .40. Shot them both and are easy to learn. But it really comes down to how it feels in YOUR hand.

I bought into Walther, and have been surfing nightly for ammo. Have 150 rounds on the way at nearly a buck apiece. Will take the Q5 Match to the range with her and if she can handle that, I’ll probably get a matched pair of CCP’s for CC. The Q5 will be mostly home defense and range... too big for carry.

Good score on the Q5. PPQ family is solid. You live in a free state where you have access to all handguns sold in the U.S. We get punished just for living in CA.

Looks like you already purchased OP. But my .02 cents. I once had a glock 19 for work and ccw. Loved that gun and shot 250/250 while at qualification. I ended up switching to the glock 23 because bigger caliber, bang bang. Lol. I wish i would have never done it. A little more kick with the .40 . . i went and bought a lonewolf conversion kit so i can shoot 9mm out of it, BUT, i would never use that kit for home defense or edc. Its not reliable.

Have you thought about a shotgun? Great for home defense. And cheap?

Like a few have posted. Be comfortable with the fire arms that are in the house, that goes for the wife too. Shoot a FEW without plugs so you know how loud that pop is and it doesnt startle you. (I use too sneak my ear plugs off at the range when in the military, ooops. Lol. What did you say? Huh? I cant hear you).

Again, make sure every one in that house can use those firearms. When protests started out here i loaded up my AR for the wife, shotgun and pistol for me, and my son said, get my .22 ready dad (proud dad moment). Luckily we never had to pull them out. Not something i want my family to go thru

    Good luck OP

I had a threaded 9mm conversion barrel in my Glock 27 and as long as I used Glock 26 mags I never ever had a problem.

Just traded it off for a Glock 23 today, and already ordered a Alpha Wolf threaded 9mm conversion barrel and several Glock 19 mags.

I thought about selling it and just buying a 19, but I have way to much 40 ammo.

For everyday carry I love no gun better than my Sig P365.

I’ve definitely thought about a shotgun for the house too. I’m holding off on that for now though. I have an aunt that’s a bailiff for the sheriffs office. I recall her telling me once that nothing spooks intruders more or makes people look for an exit fast, than the sound of a loud pump action. Perhaps it’s true. :)

I got lucky and found a PPQ22 in a 5” frame online. I bought that to pair with the Q5. It’ll be a lot cheaper to put a few thousand rounds through that for muscle and technique training. That savings will almost cover the cost of that gun. I intend to shoot the 9 as well. It’ll just be nice to have a cheaper shooting gun, while at the same time starting the wife on something not intimidating.

Once she’s good with a 22, we’ll see how she does with my full frame 9. From there, we’ll likely try out some soft shooting 9’s in a compact format. If that doesn’t work, it’s rethink things or try a 380.
