First oil change interval

I brought my time truck in for its first service and I was surprised that the interval for the first oil change is that far away. My truck has 4500km (2775 miles) on it, had it for 6 months and I was surprised that they weren’t doing an oil change. Yes I know that’s well under the recommendation but I thought because of being 6 months and going into the winter they would change it. The person at service said the first oil change is at 16000km (10000 miles ) or 12 months so that won’t be until April for me and I doubt the truck will have 5000 miles on it at that point. When I was obviously surprised she said “Synthetic oils today aren’t the same as old mineral oils”. Maybe so but I’m still surprised.

No argument with that here. Do it every 5,000 miles if you want. I had changed my previous vehicle that was a little diesel Jeep about every 6,000 miles that was the severe service recommendation from chrysler and it used synthetic oil too. Of course you could go double that if you did mostly highway driving. Short trips and stop and go traffic were and still are a thing for me. Same with towing during camping season. Those are all heavier service conditions for most vehicles. I had my oil tested by blackstone labs and it was always showing good low wear and that i could go a few thousand miles more. But oil is cheaper than engines.
I plan to fall back to the same oil change interval with the Tacoma too once all the free changes are done. Until I will probably do my own oil change at 5000 between the dealership ones.

10,000 is really probably fine if you drive over 10 miles most of time you use the truck and don't fall in to the special severe service uses in the owners manual.

 

Every 3,000 miles like my grandfather.

 

As stated by others, 10k is what toyota says, I do every 5k with my tire rotation. Grew up with 3k changes, 10k feels like too long.

Soon you will have people posting about how your wasting your money changing every 5k.

 

first oil change is the most important... i aint waiting (and didnt) for 10000 miles to come around. first one was at 2500, second around 6000, just changed it a bit over 12000. i usually go every 6-8000, with mobil 1 full synthetic, and do the tire rotations at the same time. your results may vary. Toyota states the first oil change is done at 10k in the owners manual. You are free to do it as often as you'd like, but don't expect the dealership to as part of the free Toyota Care.

I'm old school on the first change. "First" oil change is at 1,000 miles, then every 5,000. Always with full synthetic.

 

Im quite rough on my truck at times and live in metropolitan city with lots of traffic so no way im waiting till 10k miles. My oil is disgusting at 5k and smells like gas. Takes me like 30 mins to change the oil so why not.

Also makes me sleep better at night

 

Why does the Toyota app say to “replace” every 5,000 miles? The app has my VIN so it should know but the manual sez every 10,000 miles?

 

I follow the instructions that refer to special operating conditions. I both tow in the summer and do some short trips in the winter so my interval for oil and filter is 8000km or 6 months. So far so good. Always worked well on past vehicles too.

 

Change mine every 6k~7k miles. At that point it's very dark, after the change, the rig always runs better.

I know the Synthetic base stock will last 12k~15k miles easy, but I feel that dirty oil is more abrasive and bad for an engine.

 

I do oil changes seasonally, Spring and Fall.

And leave the filter for on for three years too.

Toyota 0/20 is Synthetic. But there is better oil for less money. this stuff is $4.50 per quart.

How did you determine that this product is used by the factory at time of build?

edit.. I see my question was a bit confusing.

Was wondering if the factory fills the engines with synthetic or dino oil prior to delivery to the dealer. Some motorcycles I've owned come with dino (organic) oil from the factory for break-in instead of a synthetic product.

 

Synthetic oil is used at the factory and you can buy Toyota branded oil (its Mobil I believe).

I am in the “Earl is Earl” camp so use whatever is on sale locally. Napa syn oil for example was 2.29 a quart.

 

Yeah oil is oil man. Let's not start that my oil is better than you oil stuff. Just pick one or get whatever you get the best deal on at the moment. The thing is make sure it's the synthetic, correct viscosity and meets the standards the owner manual specifies. Change it regularly and use a good quality filter and you should be fine.
I am going to use Shell Rotella gas truck 0w20 because I was able to get enough for two changes at 2.49 a quart on sale. I might continue to use that or maybe I will use Supertech or Castrol.

 

Can we just stop with this kilometer bullshit?

 

I change my '96 every 5,000 miles and have 414,000 trouble-free miles on it, so am changing my 2018 TRD Sport at 5,000 miles as well.
