What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

When I did Scion tC seats. I cut the feet off and made my own. Worked pretty good and lowered the seats to a better height

 

I just added the Rago, I got them on sale and with them powder coated and the hardware it was a pretty good deal. Although I could have made it cheaper as I’m sure I have enough scrap metal laying around. I was being lazy haha

 

They're made out of stainless steel too which is nice for if you ever wear through the powder coat

 

This project is going smooth. Too smooth. All of my raptor should be here tomorrow. Unfortunately with the holiday weekend, I’ll be away from tomorrow afternoon until Monday, so I’m hoping to shoot the raptor on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. Bought a pin welder for this project from harbor freight and have been learning a lot about body work. Should have most of that done tonight with any luck. Body work is very satisfying.

decided that I’m not going to mess with the bed that I was given. Will probably run it until I decide to build a flatbed, but think that if I don’t paint it, I’ll get around to building a flatbed faster

Last couple of days (yes, I work slow)- I've been working on replacing the clutch. Holiday weekend, it's a good time to get started- so I started LAST weekend when the weather was clear.

Then I realized this stuff is all OEM- at about 230K. All the driveshaft bolts are good and tight, the joints are perfect, maybe a little excess play in the third member. But the driveshaft bolts were so damn tight I had to go buy long combination wrenches to get them apart, as I couldn't get enough torque on the bolts otherwise. My 20 year old son, having just started his career as a mechanic, suggested we stop and go buy a proper extra-long ratchet for the bolts we can reach with a socket, and sets of SAE and Metric long-shaft combination wrenches. Made ALL the difference. The young pup has taught the old dog a few things in the last few days!

I have been using the extremely helpful Timmy the Toolman videos on YouTube to do this job. I need to send that dude beer money- having him tell us what doesn't need to be taken out, the order to take things out, then the socket size, extensions, etc, has been a HUGE help. I liked his approach so much, I went and bought the 120-tooth Gearwrench ratchets in extra-long flavor in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2" drive varieties. There's a lot to be said for a 3-deg swing angle as opposed to the 6 degree swing of the cheap ratchets I've been using.

As it stands, I haven't got much actually accomplished on the truck. I have it safely on stands, wheels off, driveshafts off (well, front half of the rear, and the entire front), and interior console and shifters out. I will be getting onto the job more in the next few days, weather permitting.

Also, don't get an aftermarket side mirror...I've had two of them and the mirror part itself always vibrates like crazy when you drive 25+mph. Find a used OEM one somewhere

 

I kicked up a log...

 

The dif-lock light on my dash keeps coming on by itself. It's not as bright as when it's locked, and the dif doesn't lock by itself, the light just comes on. If I lock the dif the light gets brighter, then when I unlock it the light goes off, but it comes back on in a few minutes.

 

Just installed spiker's hood struts, but I'm going to need to relocate my cruise module. Has anyone relocated theirs?

 

I moved mine a bit when I added a 2nd battery. Just moved it more towards the front I believe, even used OEM holes I think.

 

Finally painted the centers of my rear axel. Looks much cleaner

 

i might copy that for mine. Seemingly easier solution than the pvc thing behind the rad

 

Oof. I did that on some back road. Big ass rock swung up and cracked it. Maybe thats why my truck has been in the shop for so long

I went on Amazon and got a stick on replacement. Has held on great so far.

 

What about the shell thing? Did you replace that?

 

If you want something cheap, I have a set of ‘99 mirrors that I’m more than willing to part with. They’re the smaller ones, manual operation.
