Thought about you when I saw this. Skip to 3:30 for an idea to build a simple support stand for your bender.

I love that about California, Southern California anyways... the weather is hard to beat. Minus the smog and junk. But I’ll deal with that for warm weather. I’m in Prescott Arizona and it’s starting to get cold, like freezing at night and below 60 during the day. We have good summers but the winters are cold and angering.

Correct. Most "cheaper" Wilton Vises are imports. Its only their higher end stuff that is still USA made these. They easy way to tell...USA made they make sure to tell you in the product descriptions lol. Then the Imported are all rated at 30k PSI strength while the USA are 60k. (though it seems like they only provide the strength on imported models)

    Still not bad Vises though

yep, box sez made in China. Should be fine for my modest needs. I’m all for paying for top quality / workmanship when it’ll make a difference in what I need to do. I’m also all for not overspending for stuff that’s way better than I need.

Finally decided on what to get for my first welder, but it’s got me to thinking on some sort of table to practice/work on. I already have a large table I built of wood just for general purpose, so instead of buying a cheap HF table, I’m thinking of adding metal across the top to be able weld on. Good idea or no?

I’ve been to Douglas before. I also went to a place called Broxton? Stayed 2 weeks in pridgen with my Ex g/f and her family ( the pridgens) do you know them ? Had a blast on all the dirt roads and river riding. That was about 11 years ago.

I think that’ll work just fine. I’d put some 1/8” on top

Broxton is correct! Another little town in Coffee County (Douglas). I know a few pridgens, and I think think they’re all related one way or another :rofl:So I’m not entirely sure if I’d know them or not. If you’re into making you’re own fun and riding dirt roads, south Ga is the place to be haha

    Awesome!

It’ll work but be weary of running long beads or concentrating too much heat in one area. You’ll burn the wood underneath. I don’t think you’ll burn the garage down but definitely damage to wood under the metal.
To be fair, the cheap HF folding table is a good starter table for the occasional welder.

Great idea except clamping on a wood table is difficult. If the top has a lip you might me okay. I mounted a vise on mine and works okay. I have the fold up for other complicated crap.

I welded an entire welding cart on the floor of my garage, and then a workbench on the tailgate of my taco (by hanging the piece off the edge that I was trying to weld). I think you can use the wooden table if you're careful - but don't forget to look around for other possibilities.

You want to be very careful it all depends just what you get to welding light projects with just a few tacks lots of welding I have seen wood start to smolder and catch fire when your back is turned.

Having burned down one house and garage I might be some what paranoid.

Thanks for all the input! Some of the cons I really didn’t think about. My main objective was to have a spot to learn how to get decent, then build an actual table later on. That and not take up too much shop space, hence the two for one with what I already had. Also, I was thinking of leaving a 1” over hanging from the table so that it would be easy to clamp. With all the BF stuff going on, I’ll take a closer look at the HF table.
