Titanium goods are still made in Japan.

I’m old enough to remember when “made in Japan” signified junk. Not so today.
China has replaced it with the absolute crap they make and ship to us.

Still have my first backpacking set which I purchased in 1999 from REI. It looks very similar to the set on the back. Don't use it much anymore.

Hammock sleepers. Have a mate that’s in a very limited budget that I’m wanting to surprise this year. I found this kit that can be ordered without the quilt which works as he already has one. Looking for insight on the brand and the opinion of the setup before I order.

    Thanks in advance.

Mate is really keen on it and I’m trying to help him out a bit. I’m almost always out with my son which is why I’m sticking to a ground tent for now.

thanks for the link, I’ll read through it.

I highly recommend a under-quilt if you make the jump to a hammock. Those work well with a "over-quilt." :) You also need a bug net. You can buy hammocks with bug nets that are "built into" the hammock, or one that slides over your hammock.

What happens is wind will blow under the hammock, sucking heat away from your body even if you're sleeping in a sleeping bag. You can either put a pad in the hammock under your sleeping bag to provide a insulation layer from the wind, or go with a under-quilt.

I had an old tent that was finally worn out, so I switched to a hammock about 5 years ago. I also just bought a tent last year for the times I camp when I'm not sure I can find large trees. Between the two, I sleep much better in a hammock. The advantage of a tent is that you have a nice room to spread out your gear inside.

Yep, Hammock Gear is an awesome vendor. Fall-over backwards customer service. I own one of their underquilts and have been down to 12 degrees with it underneath me in the Dream Hammock Sparrow Recent Projects - Dream Hammock and I was toasty. It's rated for 20, but it was warm. If you are going cold weather hammocking I would recommend a hammock with an integrated weather cover, and STILL use a tarp over it. The integral weather cover helps to produce a micro climate inside that is on average about fifteen degrees warmer than the weather outside. Also, it keeps the wind off of you, a BIG consideration in successful overnight hammocking, and the quality and amount of rest you get in it without the wind waking you up all night long. My setups:

    20160421 - Spring Crappie Camp at Rayburn.jpg
20160321 - Dream Hammock Sparrow, on stand in shop, showing slope of most comfortable hang.jpg
    20150415_144227.jpg
I have owned many hammocks in my extended search for hammock nirvana. Started with the gateway hammock that is most people's first and only hammock, the one that drives many away from hammocking: the Eno Double Nest. They only got better from there. All hammocks are not created equal when it comes to OVERNIGHT comfort. One thing I learned early on: LENGTH is your friend. Don't buy a hammock less than 11 foot, and get a 12-foot if you really want the most comfortable night of sleep you can get in the outdoors.
