@crackils 8t seems like the biggest difference is that mine are 24 lbs and the other poster are 35lbs

@markgphoto do you have a frameless back window?

If guess if Mark has a frameless than the window and hardware are heavier than mine.

Yes, I have the Leer 100XQ. Frameless back window. Manufacture date was last February.

LEER 100R. I like the t-handles on the rear glass. My pup figured out how to open toppers with exposed cables on the frameless rear glass doors. The windoors were supposed to be vented, waiting for the replacements to ship so they can be swapped out.

That's a frameless back window with cables? It looks different from the other frameless/all glass that I've seen.

Oh damn just re-read your post. Im with you, I'd rather have the t handles as well. Smart pup, good job trying to keep it safe!

Yup - I’ll gladly sacrifice a few style points to not have the rear window open on its own (after a few winters in the rust belt, the cable system sucks) or if my pup hits the cable.

What is that? The rear window and hardware are identical to my old Century as well as the sliding window.


I replaced mine with some struts from a Jeep, I think it was. The ball ends are likely 10mm and all you need is the extended and retracted lengths. Just like picking shocks really. The weight rating should be on the existing strut and then when you search for a replacement you can kind of gauge what would work best for you. The ones I have now are a little longer actually and stiffer. So it'll pop open pretty easy once it breaks over and it'll swing up higher out of the way. You just need to always close it by grabbing the middle of the door. The pop rivets had already worked loose so I replaced them with some small bolts, m3 or m4 I think it was because it came from my RC stash. The set I bought actually came as a set of four and the shorter struts fit my VW mk4 hood almost perfect. Hood opens maybe 6" lower but being basically free compared to paying $20 for one, it's just fine.

How much does this thing weigh? I'm guessing in excess of 50 lbs., minimum...

Probably around 50lbs. It’s not too bad.

 

That's why I did not purchase a Rhino Rack; the 72" x 45" was 52 lbs.

I suspect that yours weighs even more. Why do I think that?

I work with strut, a lot. In fact, I have a small love affair with the stuff. Two walls in my garage have strut mounted to the wall and hung from the ceiling rafters to support two foot wide plywood shelving. One wall is 45' long. This will be standing when the rest of the house falls down from an earthquake.

But, it weighs a lot. I fear that all that weight on a fiberglass shell (I used to have an ARE on a Ford F2350) will lead to problems with the fiberglass. I could be wrong; I hope I am but I think you are taking a huge risk.

might be heavier, not sure, I should have weighed it lol. I have zero concerns with the fiberglass, although i am going to watch it. Others have huge RTT on theirs and what not. this is why I added rails underneath to distribute the load. I also have the reinforced fiberglass roof.

 

Those who have asked questions and anyone else that hasn't seen it yet. The round 1 group buy has 9 of the 10 spots full for the cap brackets. Pics and link in my quoted post below.

I had a few Leer canopies over the years until I realized they are too heavy. I like driving the truck more when it handles like a compact pickup instead of a fullsize.

These alucabs are easily half the weight and just as strong as a fiberglass cap, the side doors sealed the deal

 

I just picked this thing up for real cheap from FB market place. Wife and I are going to build it out with some insulation and sleep platform with at least one drawer for kitchen stuff. I had a junk roof basket laying behind my shed, might see if we can make it work for some extra storage.

Oh and like b_r_o said the aluminum is pretty nice and light. The wife and I can lift this thing off the truck easily with just the two of us. We'll see how much weight we add throughout the build up though.
