How well does the Adaptive Cruise Control work?

Mine works really well in the 2021 trd off-road. Don’t think I would use it in heavy traffic.

 

Okay, this is great news. If it didn't brake, it would be completely useless and downright unsafe.

 

it works really well. i didnt bother to use it for the first few months of owning the car. decided to try it out on a long trip and now i always use it when i will be on a long stretch of highway. i dont ever use it in the city, so i cant say how well it would work in heavy traffic.

 

It works great on the highway, don't understand why anyone would want to use it in traffic.

 

I use it in traffic all the time. It maintains a safe distance to the car in front, which closes at slower speeds and opens at higher speeds. I change the follow distance depending on the area/level of traffic. Closest follow = Southern California mode otherwise people cut in front of you and it slams on the brakes!

 

I just sold a v60 and the adaptive cruiser control worked amazingly well. Would take the car to a full stop and then back to 70 mph.

 

I'm still discovering new things with my 19 OR. Used this feature for the first time last week. Traffic was moderate on a toll road with few on/off ramps. I've never felt the need for cruise control on trips, but I absolutely love it in the Tacoma. Over 250 miles one way and went thru 2 construction zones (70 mph down to 35 mph) and never touched a pedal! I'll be using this feature a lot.

 

I use it on the interstate. I had set it for the longest distance but it starts to slow down way too soon. It works better setting it for the minimal distance, which is still plenty of safe distance.

 

I really like it and miss it in vehicles with old-style CC.

 

my favorite part about living in Germany was the driving. My CA license was only valid for 6 months . With a CT drivers license (and a few other US states) you could take a course and then obtain a permanent DE license. Anyways....

The autobahn (when and were available) and overall “aggressive” drivers by US standards was great. Nothing makes me more pissed off here in the US when some half asleep ape or some self appointed deputy is going slow in the passing lane (left lane). ALL slow traffic keeps right ! In this way traffic can flow better and it permits faster drivers to speed safely without having to weave in and out of traffic. When traffic is heavy of course this doesn’t apply , but absolutely nothing is more awesome than 120+ mph with other drivers making sure they don’t pull in front of you or are going to get mad cuzzz “duhhhh speed kills” .

oh and the cost of fuel isn’t that bad when you consider a lot of cars are 40+ mpg . It was almost the same gas cost vs living in CA at that time.

 

I hate it. My buddy loves it.

 

It will 100% bring you to a complete stop (I’ve tested this multiple times...nerve racking but it does work). It won’t get you going again (my 2018 Raptor would). If your speed drops below 25, as mentioned, cruise will shut off. I like it, but I liked the one on my 2018 Raptor more.
The ones saying it doesn’t brake don’t have a clue what they’re talking about, same with those saying it won’t stop fast enough. As quick as you can stop yourself, it will be quicker.

 

I have used it in heavy traffic once just to test it, but to be honest it is more stressful and tiring than actually driving the thing because I felt like I was not in control.

It works great in light to moderate traffic where people do not constantly change lanes like morons.

And it can completely stop the truck and can break very aggressively to do so.

 

If it cuts off below 25 mph then it can't bring you to a complete stop. I think at that point it would be the pre-collision sensor that kicks in. I've tried it multiple times before and once traffic slows down it beeps and turns itself off.

Toyota has a newer version called Full-Speed Range DRCC and that operates between 0-110 mph. That would take you to a complete stop. https://www.toyota.com/safety-sense/discover/feature/drcc

I love DRCC but my main issue is that on the closest settings its still enough for a car to cut into your lane which then causes DRCC to slow down to create a safe gap and then another car cuts in and this repeats over and over. I take it as a sign that I shouldn't have it on in this much traffic anyways.

 

I have to say I hate cruise control.

 

I use it all the time!

For situations where a vehicle is turning in a protected turn lane, I typically shadow the gas, and give it some to pass the vehicle if the radar doesn't unlock.

Also, for situations where the truck wants to go full throttle to get back up to speed, I'll preemptively pull back on the cruise control knob to gradually bring it back to speed myself.

I don't particularly like to use the adaptive cruise control in the twisties because it can ramp up speed at the wrong time (decreasing radius).

I keep the display on the adaptive cruise control screen, so I know when it's locked on to a vehicle.

I'm mindful each time it brakes because my brake lights are flashing too. I don't want everyone to think I'm an erratic breaker...

 

Not sure if someone answered this on another page, but yes, if you hold the cc power button for like 5 seconds it goes to regular old fashioned cruise.

 

I have never used it on my truck. I developed a distrust for cruise control, my first car was an 85 VW quantum, it had it, but I couldn’t believe it worked. Obv not adaptive, but nowadays I don’t even think about using cruise. I drove 950 miles through the southwest in two days and never even looked for the cruise stick

 

Interesting reading all the replies, varying from "I love it" all the way to "I never use cruise control".

One thing I can say for sure, DRCC made me re-learn cruise control, and adapt to how it operates. That includes all the acceleration quirks, miscellaneous traffic situations, and following distances.

Overall, after some adaptation, I'm a big fan.
