Since gaming is a requirement it absolutely must NOT have Intel graphics. Make sure it has an ATi or Nvidia gpu installed. If you can't find that within your budget get a notebook on the cheap (~$150) for your emails/browsing and use the rest of your coin (~$450) to build a budget gaming rig. Just my 2c.

    edit: seeing above post :)

I think you made a smart choice and will be really happy with it! I got my girlfriend this same series laptop a year ago on sale, and it has been great. It's basically the same as my DV series without the extra bells and whistles. I think it will be a perfect first laptop, and the best part is it didn't break the bank!

Oh okay sounds good!! Yeah I think I will be happy with the laptop I chose. Like you said, its my first laptop so when I buy another one down the road, I'll have better knowledge about this stuff.;) Its just going to be something I can mess around on. Like TW, e-mails, web browsing, just simple stuff like that.

stay away from acer. i have one (on it right now) it is good except for the fact that it is built very cheap (and i paid $900 for it). The hinge on the left side of the screen broke so now I can't hardly close the thing and it is only operating on one hinge. Acer wants 400 to fix it (I tried fixing it but cant) it will just have to stay like it is till i decide to buy a new laptop

I realize you already bought but figured I would post up for any future viewers.. I bought a Toshiba about 5 months ago and couldn't be happier with it. I was after something that was super portable so I went with a small one, smallest size before going to a net book actually. It has amazed me with what it is capable of, I even run my full 3D CAD programs on it.... which according to the specs shouldn't even be possible..

It seems like you really just need the basics which is good if you're on a budget. Have you considered where you'll be using it? What size screen you want? Portability? How much battery life you're going to need at a time? If you're planning on using wifi and not a LAN connection you're going to probably want to invest a little bit more $ into getting a better wireless internet card. If you're going for those FPS you may want a better graphics card (likewise, if you're not going to be playing games, the standard graphics card should suit you fine). I'm in college so the wifi card and the battery life were at the top of my priorities, but someone who say plays World of Warcraft all the time would rather invest in a kick ass graphics card and CPU (probably would go with an ASUS might I add). So whatever laptop suits your needs the best for what you'll be using it for is the one I would go with. I like HP, but that's just my $0.02

Lenovo is the best I have ever used hands down. I had the thinkpad T60 and I kick myself for getting rid of it. It was so easy to replace parts if need be and never had problems with it. IBM owns

^ this is so not true, I haven't seen any PC last over 4 yrs without having to completely restore it and re-install the operating system. PC's were made with the word "disposable" in mind.

I'm an apple fan boy because I buy good products. Hence the Tacoma :D

I'm not trying to start a huge debate on which brand is better. To each there own. This is just my opinion based on my experiences.

Once you go Mac you don't go back. I bought my first Macbook 4 years ago and it works just as well as the day I bought it. Before my Mac I had a PC and after a year of normal use it was already slow and annoying (toshiba). The PC sounded like it was going to lift off my desk and take flight the fan was sooo loud. Plus you cant get viruses or spyware on a Mac, no annoying software to always pay for and update. Its worth the extra $$$ in the long run without a doubt.

Okay I just checked my e-mail this morning and HP said that they declined my order but didnt say why so I am going to call them sometime today. I know its not about payment cause I have more then enough in my bank so I am curious on what they have to say. Looks like I might be going with another manufacturer.

Okay I talked to HP and they said something with my shipping address wasnt found. I told them to go ahead and cancel my order cause I went ahead and bought a Dell latop this morning. Its the Inspiron 17R. Its got a 17" LED HD screen and a bit more memory then the HP did. I paid about $650 for this one shipped. Here is the link if anyone wants to check it out and add some input for me if you have any.

you can either spend the money on the macbook, or spend more replacing other brands over and over. my gf went through 3 laptops in 2 years before she finally figured it out and i converted her. i run mac's at work and home and never have any issue. in the long run it will save you money i think. just my two cents...

I have a macbook pro! I really like it but i also have a gateway that is good too and it cost half the price of what my macbook did. I bought the mac to edit my gopro video's and riding pictures and its good for that.

Hey everyone I received my Dell laptop yesterday via FedEx and I really like it!! Its a little bigger then I thought it would be but then again with a 17" screen and full keyboard, what else should I have expected. Its only about the mid-range model but its more then what I need. So far so good, but then again, I've only had it for one day.
