There is truth in this. Growing up I hung with a mix of kids from varying backgrounds. Some were handed a brand new car, others (like me) were handed beaters, and a few had to wait until they were 18 when they could finally afford to buy one on their own. Of that group, only one kid truly appreciated his first car enough to take care of it - it was a partially restored 69 mustang that his old man made him start rebuilding when he was 12. He was the only one who managed to keep the same car through college. The rest of us- our cars were in the junkyard for varying reasons before we even got our high school diplomas.

Kids learn best by hard lessons. Do as you wish.

I said you be his counsel and guide, not his bankroll He PAYS. If you want to help him with a bit of cash.....

Everything needs to be in his name. He needs to be responsible for his vehicle costs.

Consider this. He has an accident. He is at fault. The other party loses a dominant arm as a result. Everything is in your name. Litigation begins. You could potentially pay for the lost arm, lost wages for the expected life of the injured person. Simply because your pockets are deepest.
If everything is in his name, then they can only litigate him.

Another possible......He receives numerous moving violations. His insurance sky rockets. He receives more moving violations. Losses license, insurance is dropped. Later he earns license, now he is in the highest risk category, assuming he can get coverage.

My point. Think this through. Not as a Father, but as a man who needs to protect himself, his family and their future.

you need 4wd to get to most of the decent spots on the big island. Other islands are totally different. AWD Subaru absolutely will not cut it. Not even close. (Last part was answering someone else’s question)

Frontiers are great trucks. I was considering them and would be happy to own one, I only got a taco because that's what showed up in my price range and specs when I was searching.

Like any other vehicle there are years to avoid. Watch out for timing chain guide rattling on '10 and older, and strawberry milkshake of death (self destructing auto tranny) on '11 and older. On the plus side they seem to be much less susceptible to rust than tacomas.

00C13793-FC38-4881-BCF3-17310897FDAE.jpg I got this 2003 for my boy for $7k. Might be worth checking out shipping cost as I can only imagine inventory alone might be slim on an island.

Ok, so a friend may or may not be offering a 02 double cab short bed. Automatic, OR package, but 2wd. With supercharger. 170k. I’m trying to jump on this even though it’s 3 years too early. Thought? Price?

Earlier isn't bad, gives you time to start making it a father/son fixer upper.

If something happened to mine a Frontier would replace it.

Buying expensive vehicles has never been my MO, I just happened to buy mine before the fever befell everyone.

Depends what you want to do. I have 2WD and live in a cold weather state. Drive it every day

If you go outside of Toyota, don't go GM. My 2006 Colorado puked the engine at 70K and GM screwed me royally on fixing it despite it happening within the original powertrain warranty as well as their "secret" warranty which of course nobody knows about but me.ho ho ho
