I'm not super familiar with the differences in network switches. My understanding is you connect one port to your modem and the others to devices you want hard wired.

One of my goals it to create a NAS starting with a small rpi setup, then if that works maybe go full commercial. Would the 8 port work?

I could be wrong, but I assume that at the moment you have either a modem and then a combination router/switch, or perhaps a modem/router/switch that is all in one. In either case, you likely have a switch that currently lets you connect multiple computers to the modem at the same time (probably 4 hard wired ports and a wireless network). Another switch would allow you to expand the number of hardwired ports you have to plug devices into. You would run a single Ethernet cable from your current router/switch to a new switch, and then use the renaming ports on the new switch to connect additional devices. By default, all the devices you connect to any of the switches will be able to talk to one another and to the internet. Both switches I have listed will do the above. They also have some additional features that may come in handy later on if you get more technically advanced.

My main setup is one of those comcast modem/switch/router combos. I run a Lan cable to my office where I have a 4 port switch for my work computer, personal desktop, and chromecast.

I'll take the 8 port switch. sending pm
