4.0L V6 1gr-fe Antifreeze Leak NO. 1 coolant outlet pipe Tacoma

hi group I have a 07 Tacoma that is eating antifreeze, thought it was a water pump so I ordered it.

Turns out it is NOT the water pump but the tube that is on top of the motor under the intake.

Trying to do some research on what it is called and how to fix it

Toyota calls it a water pipe.
When looking it up it said there was 4 different option.

I’m thinking you have to remove the Lower Intake to get to it?
I don’t know if there is a way to access the mounting bolts with the lower intake on?
Maybe @Torspd will know?

 

Wonder if it is just the o ring gone on the pipe ?

That pipe doesn’t come out without removing one cylinder head. But I doubt the pipe is rusted thru and leaking.
Likely an o ring in the front if that.
There are lots places coolant can leak in the front of the engine.

Wow, you have to remove the cylinder head?
Almost makes you want to find a different way to “ make it work”

My answer to an overly complicated problem.
“Just because it isn’t right, doesn’t mean it wont work?”
Zip-ties and Duck Tape. No one will ever know.

 

The coolant is very corrosive and that pipe is definitely leaking.

I'd suspect the water pump is leaking as well, which includes the orings for that pipe.

I'd also check the radiator for a leak.

Lastly the headgaskets leak coolant, its easiest to see the leaks from underneath looking up at the headers.

 

Well, if it is true the head has to come off to remove the pipe.
You are half way there? Might as well do the gaskets?

 

I've only heard of the pipe failing, thats just an oring leak to me. Thats the thermostat housing which ya has to be removed to do the water pump.

The pipe is a bastard and is in the way of the knock sensors.

 

Truck has 436000km

Options
1. Keep feeding it antifreeze
2. Put some stop leak in it
3. Replace the pipe (don’t think this is going to happen if I need to remove the head)
4. Put new water pump on and put new o ring on

4.5 if pipe is bad build up with rtv sealant

Any options I am missing ?

 

Stop leak is a bad option and if you end up deciding to repair it later it will complicate the process by needing to flush every part of the cooling system.

I suspect headgaskets.

436k I would personally consider a used motor as an option, your motor is heavily corroded from the salt coast and a fresh motor from a non-rust area is another choice.

 

I say go with option 4.
