Highest point in Kansas is Mount Sunflower which is 4,039 feet above sea level. Basically a dirt patch in the middle of nowhere but has some cool metal artwork. Far off my route but worth the trip to bag a highpoint.

Nice to see some other paddlers on here. How was the level? I haven't been to the Cumberland plateau in about ten years but hope to get back soon!

    Safe travels, good lines

Edit- I remember having a great time on the river, super beautiful run. The shuttle took a long time but worth it

Yeah it's always fun out there. Not very hard water but very pretty. Love living in the south east so much water to boat!

September trip to the Gila Wilderness, New Mexico. Believe this is the Sandy Point trailhead pullout but not completely sure. Came in from the west via Mogollon all the way up 159, quite a long drive.

Another angle at the same spot. Feels like you can see across the entire world from up here.

I figured I'd take the paddleboard down next time. I grew up paddling in north Alabama so we also traveled all through TN and NC as well. I'm just disappointed that the tallulah scheduled releases have been canceled.

And one last shot, I hope it comes out, the moon was beautiful last night: (got to remember to bring the tripod for night shots!)

Fun fact, the saying "Kansas is flatter than a pancake" is actually factually correct. The deviation in elevation across Kansas is less than the deviation in an average pancakes surface. :D

    Nice sunset shot!

A little trip last weekend to my job site. Went in over the mountain instead of the highway.

I wish stuff like that was close to home!!
First 2 are in the Panamint mountain range, inside of Death Valley National Park.
The large mine is known as the "White Point" mine in Warm Springs Canyon, right at the old camp.
Third shot is out near Baker, Ca.

127C1CBA-6660-47C1-BEEE-ECACF583D0ED.jpg @r1de, we were in DV for the holiday too. Weather was nice and the moon was great for evening hikes. It was our first trip with the kids (3 & 5) and they are both excited to go back.

@stickyTaco Very cool! It was quite nice out there the last few days!
Head up Warm Springs Canyon to Striped Butte Valley next time. Really neat up there! Great hiking. Manley Peak is right above. A weird seriously striped butte sticking up out of the little valley, springs everywhere, good camping spots, bouldering... it does not get much better. :)

For a real 4x4 adventure, with white knuckle rocks and some pretty technical stuff (for me at least), get to Striped Butte Valley from the west, near Ballarat, over what is called "Mengel Pass", gorgeous canyon, lots of old mines, cabins, history.:thumbsup:
Hardest trail I have done yet with our ole Taco. She made it just fine, a lot of it in the dark, only scuffed our fancy rims at the worst.
    Now they have battle scars!
(we never stopped to take pics going over, just wanted to get there, the dang go-pro didn't record it either even tho it was told too! We also did not go back over the pass from east to west, which is harder, gravity is not on your side in that direction)

Here's a pic of the place, with the namesake hill in the background:

Nice. I'm familiar with mengel. This was a quick trip so we didn't venture south of 190. I try and get down there a couple times a year when I have to go to Vegas for work and generally tag on an extra 3-5 vacation days to explore DV. This was the first time with the kids though.

I'm hesitant to do much with the kids around a lot of the mines and cabins because they are pretty young still so we stuck to some hiking in Lemoigne Canyon and moonlight hikes in Marble Canyon and on the Panamint Lake Bed.

Side note...something I noticed when packing is the amount of stuff for two adults and two kids for a long weekend is significantly more than I pack when it's just me for a 10 day work/camp trip.

A Semi Truck can't carry enough stuff to keep the small ones entertained out on the trail.
But some really old, brought along "just in case" climbing rope, a found rusty pipe, and a tree seemed to work great this trip. o_O
