Great - thanks - I assume there is a quick way to tell? I've not dealt with anything on the ECU up top this point

This is great to read / hear!
if 04B33 is really this good we will see how we can implement piece of it into older trucks cals.

The only unfortunate part is when toyota changes the *code* portion and not the maps. That can't be implemented, so as a result some trucks will never have the exact same capability (trucks older than 19)

It’s too bad Toyota didn't release this for all Tacomas. Not impressed. If they are trying to fix the newer ones first I can’t imagine they will bother with earlier models. Especially with most 2018 and 2017 models warranties over or ending any time now.

TSB-0043-20 was released earlier this year (04.21.2020). It was for the 2016 / 2017 MTs and updated us to 04B14. I drove it Stock for about 800mi / 2 tanks. Later on, I drove a 2020 MT (04B91) and it felt nearly the same.

IMHO, I can only guess that there will be TSBs for the 2016 / 2017 ATs (currently 04B04) and 2018 MT / ATs (currently 04A71 / 04A61).

I went to my dealership this morning to check on this. I was actually a little apprehensive because my truck shifts fine. As in no issues whatsoever but because it falls into the affected category as per the vin I figured I’d ask.

The first thing they asked me was if I had any problems, to which I responded appropriately with a resounding no. They told me they only do the TSB if there are issues because if there aren’t any it could actually cause one. I’m perfectly happy with mine as is so I didn’t push it.

I understand completely but it’s amazing what we can get used to and adapt to the truck. This TSB really hits the mark with a lot more power with less pedal input, and greatly refined shift logic. I think you would benefit from it. Are you 04B31 or 04B32?

Went in to my local stealership to have the fuel pump recall done today. Before they took my keys they asked me if I had any other issues I’d like them to look at. Half jokingly and not knowing about the new TSB, I told them to make my truck shift like a normal vehicle and top off the fluid. They laughed at my naïveté and said they’d see what they can do.

Truck was finished after a few hours. Adviser tells me the tech found a TSB update for the ECU to help with the shifting issues. Sure as shit...

Spent a little time driving around this afternoon. I have to say the truck drives like normal now. The truck actually holds gears now and has much better throttle response, especially in the lowest 3 gears. I’d say it’s worth the trip to the dealership if you’re thinking about having it done!

Have you noticed much difference in the 04B33 maps vs 04B31/32? The difference is real.

Toyota gives away warranties. I wouldn’t bet on that being the reason.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
My 02/2020 build is also on 04B81 and I really never understood everyone complaining about shifting and lack of power. This explains it why I never felt those issues from the start.

Might have to do with internal or outside processes having to do with change control. At some level there has to be some kind of QA/certification process I'd bet for each model year or hardware version. Emissions, mileage, and safety(and maybe other stuff too) are all model year specific even if they end up being the same rules for a number of years. There might also be international hoops they need to jump through if they want to make that TSB work for every country in a region(or maybe whole world?). If I have to jump through a bunch of hoops I think I'd naturally start with the cars most likely to be suffering warranty claims and giving bad impressions to my customers and work my way back through the years. One hopes they will eventually make it back to us poor beta testers :)

I understand - I had it done even though I don't have any issues either - though up mountains (as I'm using cruise) it did shift often and rev, but I just attributed it to the nature of the vehicle and it certainly was not an annoyance of any kind (not jumping, surging, etc). I drove a couple hundred miles last night (after the update) - with my son in the truck (he has a 2002 TRD OFF Road Tacoma - standard trans). He immediately noticed the difference in the shifting patterns as we went up the first mountain. The RPMs never spiked and it definitely shifted smoother. I'm glad I got it done - but to be honest - if I had not had it done I would not have any concerns.

The way you describe it now, is the way mine has been since the start. I can’t see how the TSB could make it any better than it is. There’s something to the old saying “Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke.”

100% understand- to be honest while I was waiting in the dealership showroom - aside from asking about a Landcruiser - i was regretting even having them do it/ and being there! If I were you I would not do a thing either. As I said my son noticed - in his words a big difference - to me it WAS different, but I would not say it fixed anything as I did't think anything was broken.

I don’t really know offhand, and I get what you’re saying but I can unequivocally state that I haven’t gotten used to or adapted to anything. If you see my prior post, my truck has always shifted perfectly. I have zero issues.

The way you guys describe the truck after the TSB is the way it already works. When something already works as it’s supposed to, I can’t see the logic in messing with it. Seriously, what’s the end game? To make it do more of what it already does?

I’m not one of those guys that denies there were problems. I know some of these trucks had shifting issues. I’ve stated this before in other posts. I have two friends whose third gens were giving them fits. It almost kept me from buying one. I wasn’t even considering buying one till one day I was at the dealer looking at Tundras and explained to the salesman why I wasn't interested in Tacoma’s; despite the fact that I liked the way they handled themselves off road. He urged me to test drive the OR I presently own. I took it out and put it through it’s paces and was amazed at how smoothly it shifted. Not just compared to the bad ones I’d seen but compared to any normal vehicle.

I have no idea why some of these trucks have issues and some don’t. And I’ve seen people on this site get heated when one person or the other chimes in with their own experience - either bad or good. But because I’ve seen both ends of the scale, I can say with certainty, neither side is wrong. It all just depends on what you ended up with.

That’s why I always recommend that people test drive the shit out of the actual one they are buying, and not just a random example off the lot.
