Hey guys, I lost my mph gauge on my 2008 manual v6 taco and took it to my local auto parts store and they pulled a bad speed sensor a fault code. So I bought the vehicle speed sensor located at the back right hand side of the trans. by the drive shaft with no luck fixing the problem. Any thoughts?Wrong sensor?

If I’m going to take a WAG ( wild ass guess) I would say he got the P0500 code.

Hey guys. Yes it was a po500 vehicle speed sensor a. I have a standard so they tell me i only have one. Which I replaced. I pulled the cables of off my battery because someone said I might need to reset the computer. Check engine light has gone but, but no speedometer yet? Any thoughts?

I had to replace my speedometer gear too. It’s nylon & most likely has flat spots from the speed sensor failing. You’ll need to get that from the dealer & they’ll need your VIN to get the correct gear. The gear rotates against a metal gear inside the transmission. When the speed sensor on mine failed, it was stuck in one position, getting worn down by the spinning metal gear.

Your talking about the piece that goes into the sensor end and is held with that funky little clip. I inspected mine before putting it into the new sensor. Speedo is still completely dead. I hear alot about the abs sensors. Are they a completely different curcuit and code. I have had abs issues in the past.

Yes, that’s the gear. Not sure about the ABS sensor codes. I too thought my gear was fine too & my speedo didn’t work after changing the sensor. I went to the dealer & ordered a new speedo gear. When it came in, I compared them side by side & you could see a subtle difference on the gear teeth. I also had some small nylon shavings on the gear teeth. I put the new gear in & speedo works perfectly.

Thanks charles. I will order mine up tomorrow. I'm wondering if thats usually the problem on a p0500 and not the actual sensor?

The p0500 is the code for the sensor failing. It causes the gear to stop spinning or spin intermittently. That’s where you get the subtle flat spots worn into the speedo gear.

Is your truck a 5 or 6 speed manual? and could you please describe where this nylon gear can be found?

5 speed manual, it’s on the right side of the transmission. The gear slips inside the speed sensor into the transmission.

Just because you got a P0500 code does NOT meant the sensor itself failed; you need to troubleshoot the circuit and make sure that everything (Power, control, ground) is good.
