I have a 2019 OR DC that has a "dead zone" at 45 and 65 where, under regular, light acceleration on a flat road, will be in about 1000-1100 RPM. If I give it gas, not enough to downshift, but a significant amount more pedal, the engine lugs and the RPMs don't budge. It's as if there is zero throttle response, even though Im adding a good deal more pedal. I've always been under the impression that lugging an engine is bad for it...

So frustrated! I have had my 2017 OR DC in multiple times to 2 dealers in Maryland for the Bi-Polar transmission. The most recent 3 times I have tried to get them to install the current TSBs. I have had 2 cases opened with Toyota and the dealer still has denied the flash and indicated that the new TSBs would not be of any help. I've now been without my truck for 2 days while they run diagnostics to send to Toyota, but they still indicate that they cannot do TSB-0058 or TSB-0062, because it would not help and would be considered an unnecessary repair. I thought my symptoms matched pretty well for the TSBs and even on the 5 minute test drive with the Tech was able to demonstrate at least 1 time the surge when getting on the highway at about 45 miles per hour. They would not agree to travel any long distance to the mountains with me so that I could show them how it behaved poorly on a steep incline at high altitude. The people at Toyota have always been very pleasant but have never resolved anything.

Hate to have to become an auto tech to do a job the dealer should be doing. Although, I have tried 2 dealers and wasted a lot of time. I'm ready to jump over to a Colorado or Ranger, but they are not as good off road as Tacoma. Can't believe Toyota is so poor on customer service.

After my 2017 was totaled, I stayed with a Tacoma. My 2019 has had no transmission issues. It drives like a dream by comparison. I never have to use the ECT power button and I now get the advertised 18-22 MPG instead of the 13-18 MPG that my 2017 got. Toyota always tried to tell me my 2017 was driving as designed, not a chance. I noticed some Tacoma owners did not have issues and others were constantly looking for a fix to the Trans problem. I think it might be hit or miss whether you get one with trans issues or not, but the difference between one that behaves and one that doesn't is worth finding a fix.

So, this thread is dead. However, my truck is a 2018 and I have never even brought up this issue to my dealership. What exactly should I say or do to have them perform the TSB for the transmission?

This TSB is still the latest for 2018s. Although, I can only guess that there will be one for the 2018s and 2016 / 2017 ATs at some point.

You want to tell your dealer that you are experiencing the symptoms noted in the TSB. Some dealers will straight up deny you, some dealers will test drive to see if the symptoms are there, and some (rarely!) will believe you and spend the 10min to flash you.

Of course, there are likely a bunch of hooked up TW'ers in your area that could do the same without the frustration.

    Yeah.
I just had the fuel pump recall done and some other minor warranty items. I told them it was hunting for gears on the highway. They flashed it and never asked any questions. This is about the easiest job they will get, so not sure why any dealer would argue.

So I assume that if I never brought this up the TSB was never performed right? How can I find out if it was? I can probably post on the Regionals and see if someone is willing to help me out. My dealership is pretty far from me. Appreciate the advice man.

    Yeah.
Seems to just hold a gear longer and not switch back and forth so often. Also, seems to not try to grab a higher gear too soon like when going up a slight incline, and downshifts more appropriately when going down a steep grade (grabs a lower gear sooner). Gas mileage appears to be about the same. Overall, I'm happy with it, but I wasn't that unhappy with it before.

Sometimes, dealers will rando flash folks. It was how we found out about new ECU IDs a couple times.

You can check with the Carista or OBD Fusion apps:
Or with TechStream and a Tactrix adapter. If you had a Tactrix, you could just do the work yourself.

Good to know. I have no major issues with it currently. The only thing that really gets to me, is when I’m going uphill and it drops gears tremendously and it sounds like I’m racing whoever’s next to me.
