Alright everyone, time to start looking for something bigger to pull around my Samurai. As I look at these full size trucks, I can't help but be impressed by the price of a fully loaded (TRD Pro) Tundra vs. what appears to be the comparable Dodge product.

I haven't driven the Rebel yet but I was pretty impressed with the drive on a Ram Big Horn. Anyone have any real world experience or thoughts on one vs. the other?

I'd go with the ram, or wait for the 2022 tundra and see what they do with it.

I really don't want to wait another year for the Tundra, or I would definitly be going the wait and see route. I'm also always super hesitant about the first model year of any new vehicle, especially if they are going V6 twin turbo.

Good point. Well with the 2021 tundra, you're buying a dinosaur, but it's tried and true. Ugly as all get out, but that's a matter of opinion

Love my 19 pro tundra. The 20 has a few additions like PTS and BSM

I bought it while I could still get the 5.7 and 6 speed auto. I didn’t want to be a guinea pig for the new platform like with my 16 Tacoma

22 tundra is supposed to have a hybrid option. If it’s a V8 I’ll bite

Fwiw, I had a 2017 ram 1500 big horn. I know it’s not the same generation/ body as the new ones. I bought new, traded it in with 30,000 miles, so this is no long term review. But I really liked it, the bang for your buck was wayyy more than other trucks, I had options I’d never considered before because of price on other makes. I loved the 5.7L and even with the 3.92s I still got average of 20 mpg with the 8 speed auto transmission. Towed our camper from Illinois to Yellowstone and back, averaged 16 mpg.

Loved that truck, only traded it in bc I convinced myself I wanted another jeep. Now I would prefer to buy the tundra, but if I was legitimately going to buy a new full size truck? I’d probably buy the ram again, just for the cost vs value.

I like the Rebel...so much tech around vs the old Tundra...Toyota is always behind the tech but is super realiable full size truck..two full size truck with a good looking body..

Any real boat guys here? Buying a Ram is like buying a Bayliner. Lots of tech, but not much else. Dead in the long run. If you want to trade it a couple years you'll be fine, just don't wait too long.

If the new RAMs are as trouble free as my 2015 Chrysler 300C was, he will be in the shop every other week until the warranty runs out.

It's not a V8. The 8s are dead. The base engine will a 3.5 TT V6....basically a strengthened version of the current Lexus LS500 engine. The optional powertrain will include a hybrid booster to add more torque.

That engine in the Lexus puts down 442 lbs ft of torque at 1600 rpm. Expect much higher numbers with the Tundra....especially with the hybrid booster

I'm at a similar point as you OP. Though I wouldn't consider a Dodge product, I like the reliability and resale of Toyotas too much. I have had 2 tundras and absolutely loved them, my last Tundra was a '16 TRD Pro that I traded for an '18 Raptor...I regretted doing that. I'm really considering selling my '20 Tacoma and going back to the Tundra. My hesitation is it's at the end of a lifecycle (that's good and bad). I will likely sell my Tacoma and wait for the next gen to come out. If I don't like the next gen, I can always buy a slightly used previous gen.

THIS. There are so many manufacturers throwing tech in boats and cutting corners everywhere else. I sell MasterCrafts and tell people the best thing they can do is go look at the competitive model that's been used for 3-4 years.

I am going to bet the V8 is going away, and I will go further and say the Tundra, Tacoma and 4 runner will get a hybrid as well as turbo V-6 options and the platforms will share even more parts between them....If you want a new Toyota V8 you better get one now...
