No, here's picture of the crankshaft the transmission input shaft does not fit into a pilot bearing

An incredibly bad design as far as I am concerned .
I understand that the transmission was beefed up to counter act the missing pilot bearing . After carefull consideration , I think Toyota needs to do more to compensate for this switch .
When you mash your foot to the floor , your clutch disc is supported by the input shaft . A rotating clutch disc thats spinning at 3000 rpm creates a lot of load even if it only weighs 4 pounds . In days gone by when you mashed your foot to the floor , The pilot bearing use to support the clutch disc . Now , when you mash your foot to the floor , you rely on the transmission input shaft to support the load of that spinning clutch disc
In my opinion , its one of the main reasons you cant keep a throwout bearing alive in the Tacoma .Not the top reason but 1 of the reasons .
Considering very few members have throwout bearing issues with the 5 speed manual which uses a pilot bushing , I may have a valid point
With the above mentioned , is there room to install a pilot bearing or is the input shaft too short to extend into the back of the crankshaft ? also , is there a snub on the input shaft that would except a pilot bearing ? sorry been a while since I did a clutch on the 6 speed manual.
Somebody show me some side views of the input shaft please

What does the flywheel look like? The splines on the input shaft engage the flywheel. Which supports the input shaft. Maybe they figured the bearing wasn’t needed. Is anyone killing crankshafts or clutches because of the change. I haven’t heard of it.

I agree, having a pilot bearing would likely prevent or lessen the accelerated clutch release bearing wear. This is the best shot I have when I had mine removed a few months ago:

What? The flywheel doesn't have any splines, it bolts directly to the crankshaft. I believe the input shaft (without measuring depth) would sit just at the face of the inner bore of the flywheel. Here is the OEM flywheel:

Here is a URD heavy flywheel, both pretty similar in design where the input shaft area is:

He or she probably had a pilot bearing in the original design but was told to remove it by the bean counters to save cost... ;)

My bad. Now that I see the pic. I was having a brain fart and lack of coffee. I was thinking of the splines in the clutch plate. Duh. Totally my bad.

no worries, happens to the best of us lol. I know I need at least 1 cup of coffee before I can speak a complete coherent sentence myself.

The rear of the input shaft inside the trans is supported by a big bearing. I have a new one around here but it is way too cold to go dig it out and grab a pic, maybe later if I remember, .....Anyway, the excuse aside, I will not argue that this is not the best of designs but that thing caught my attention and has stayed in the back of my mind 5 years after first digging into one of these transmissions.
