Hey guys I have a sound that's starting some great concerns. Ive researched the "Tacoma tick" where the injectors make a ticking sound in the engine bay. That's not the case here. My tick only happens at low speeds, not low rpm's and won't do it again while at higher speeds. Sound comes from under the truck on passenger side. From a dead stop to 10 or 15 mph it will make this tick sound then go away. If im above 15 mph and mash the throttle to get it to do it it won't. Its only at lower speeds. Im planning on driving to Mount Rushmore in May next year I need to see if anyone else knows about this sound or if I should just go ahead and have it looked at. 2009 Tacoma DCSB 250K+ miles

Does the tick get faster if you increase speed, or does it stay constant from 0 to 15 mph?
Maybe it's exhaust related? If you can pin point where, or have someone listen from the outside, since it's slow speed any way, maybe you can hone in on the area. Or put a GoPro under there and see.

Another thought is you could try and place your truck on a dyno and check from there, if you know anyplace that has one.

No it doesn't get faster. It ticks for maybe a couple seconds then stops and if I slow down then accelerate again it won't do it until I come back to a dead stop. I tried using my gopro to get the sound but captured too much road noise. Others have heard this sound when riding with me but it can't be pinpointed.

I think the closest one is a 4 hour drive but ill ask around. Good idea thanks. Just need to get this figured out before taking my 3000+ mile trip next year.

All shields were tight. Its more of a mechanical tick sound than a rattling shield.

also if you have any skids or botled armor or anything I used to get a tick/rattle that ended up being my exhaust rubbing on my skid. took the skid off and ground a part off to give room. No more sound.

Check air intake at passenger side going thru fender. Once the insulation wears it rattles and it can be loud.

I'll check that out but the sound is more underneath the truck. Not saying that couldn't be the issue but I'll check it out.

Make sure there's not a big ole stone stuck in your tire tread.

that's possible. I just figured that if they were to make such sounds then it would be constant right? Not just from a dead stop up to 15 mph and not any other time? I haven't checked for any play but I won't rule this out when I do another inspection.

Well sort of, they could loose play at high speeds since they are under more tension.

I have checked for this. This sound has been going on for about a week and that was my first thought but it goes away after 15 mph and only happens after a dead stop to acceleration.
