Thought you would've had those CV axles rebuilt by now!

    With?

I did some light off roading the other day and have nothing bad to say about the "extended traveling" axles I have.

    Update:
Alright party people, time for another update. :bananadead:
This week was kid of a failure but I am making the best of it :annoyed:

The manual hubs I bought with the assembly and the CV axles attached was a decent success. The hubs are good and they will be rebuilt but it turns out the axles were aftermarket. These aftermarket axles can be rebuilt but they are so cheap that its not worth it (I went to pick them up and the end piece fell off on its own ).

    3B0E92DF-50AA-46CD-B7A8-50818E1D05C8.jpg

The original plan was to send them to get rebuilt by
J&J Axle Supply. However, since they are an aftermarket part, they said they could rebuild them but it would not be worth it. So I was very disappointed and upset about having wasted this time, but they just got a set of rebuilt axles in stock that I got for $420 shipped. Now with that price being said, it would have cost me $300 for the pair being rebuilt plus shipping round trip across the country (VA->CA & CA-> VA). Ultimately, I am spending a bit more but due to the circumstances this is the best route. Of course, the best thing would have been to not purchase the aftermarket ones but I had no idea they were not OEM. :anonymous:

    EC7CC8AD-6918-4FA6-812F-7E52E82CB0AD.jpg

    Key take aways:

    1. Know how to identify an aftermarket CV axle (OEM has straight edges where as aftermarket is completely curved)
    2. I got more experience with taking apart stuff and now I know how to rebuild it
    3. I completely understand how the hubs work and when I took one apart I did NOT lose the detent pin :)
    4. Patience is key (mine is running thin)
Additional note, this project is going to have to take a big break with Christmas and New Years coming up. The project will continue in the new year once I get back.

    Good shit.

While you're sitting back not working on stuff, just order some OEM reman axles and let them sit until you start working on stuff again.

Why would I want a second set of axles?

Cause the old set you have are useless for the most part; could come in handy as a trail spare.

That and you should put a good set of axles in while you're at it as part of your 4x4 swap.

It's why you're going to rebuild your hubs too.

You want all fresh parts going in.

    Ok

Wasn't sure if you only mentioned them as part of your rebuild (before you found out you had aftermarket axles).

Order your front diff plug as suggested?

If you plan on offroading, trust me you'll want to always carry at least one spare CV axle on every trip. I've only had to change one out on the trail but it was good that I had it with me when I did

CV axles are the weak link in the IFS 4wd system, for good reason - they'll usually break before you do any damage to something more expensive. And they aren't that difficult to replace. Not too uncommon to blow an axle on the trail depending on how difficult the trail is and how you're driving. Lift and heavier tires adds more stress to them

OEM and OEM rebuilds are stronger all around than most aftermarket axles hence the big price difference, but the cheap aftermarket ones make for good trail spares

4x4. You'll save money, and it'll be a fun project to improve your mechanical skills... unless, you pay someone to do it for you

    A 3rd gen 4x4, would cost more than a 4x4 conversion

You missed the part where he's already gathered a lot of parts for a conversion

    Greetings,

The project is not dead. I got home from Christmas and got covid and just started my next semester of school. Need to work on cleaning up hubs and diff.

Finally bought totes for the hubs and diff so they aren’t sliding around in my bed anymore.

Hope y’all are doing well and staying safe.

    -Mac
