Winch wiring questions

    I'm trying to think how best to wire my winch in and could use some help/advice.

    I have a 27F northstar battery.

    I'm putting in a quick disconnect switch for the battery for convenience when I'm working under the hood and a 150a breaker to protect the winch/battery from overdrawing. I don't have a blue sea fuse panel, but don't have anything extra wired up except the winch, a pop n lock, and maybe one other small thing I'm forgetting.

    So how's the best way to connect everything? I drew out a crummy pic, but basically I can't decide if the breaker should isolate the winch, or be connected to everything. What do you think would be best?

    Skids,bumper,lights,tires,mud
    Circuit breaker for winch only, waterproof fuse holder and fuses for each smaller circuit would be simplest, keep everything protected, isolated, don’t lose everything if something happens to one circuit.

    That ^^^

    You probably don't want your lights/engine/etc to shut off mid pull in the dark/cold.

    You’ll need a pretty beefy switch to disconnect.
    There are few fuse/breaker options to work with as a winch will draw up to 600 amps...your breaker will throw every time and become a single point of failure.

    Yeh...that would be no fun. No fun at all. :rain:

    I was planning on using the disconnect switch for safety while doing routine maintenance so I wouldn't have to disconnect the battery (I'm lazy), not necessarily during winch pulls. Would your advice still apply in this case?

    I'm concerned that much amperage being drawn would hurt the winch or the batt. Is that just me being overly concerned? In that case I guess I'll be returning this 150A breaker for a way bigger one...I don't understand what a crank is or a cold crank when looking at the specs for my batt, but I thought I read somewhere it had a max draw of 180A-ish. but I can't find that now that I'm looking for it...
