What Have You Done To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Stuck on a new dashcam. Hopefully this one lasts a little longer than the last.

 

You AAL or anything to the rear? Reading different info about the need for something due to the weight of cap. Its only like 180lbs though so I don't know.

 

It is what I didn't do to my 3rd Gen Today.

The good news is that I was able to install them fairly easily. @RivetNutBob, you were right. Even with my extremely limited skill set I was able to do it. So that was a miracle. The bad news. They are only held on by one bolt and to be honest they didn't feel safe to me.

Keep in mind, I am not looking to do serious overlanding. I am not looking to pull my buddy's truck up the side of a ravine. But I would like the option to pull someone out of the snow, a snow bank or maybe even out of a ditch given that we tend to drive in heavy snow from Upstate NY, through the Adirondacks all the way deep into Northern Quebec.

So now I am thinking about either this:

I feel like I could install the one from BP ... but the ARB one ... well ... that may be beyond my skill set. Story of my life.

I would like to sort out my recovery point situation quickly so that I can get on with the next step ... the roof rack ...

 

No I didn’t add anything to the rear. The cap honestly doesn’t add much weight considering a truck is designed to carry weight in the bed. You’d be fine without adding anything.

 

Welding on the set you ordered and sent back would be the ideal solution.

 

You are assuming that I can weld without burning down my garage !

After looking carefully at these in person I just didn't feel comfortable with them. Doesn't mean they are not a good product for someone but I think I want something stronger and safer. Overkill? Probably. But I've been pushing and pulling people out of snow for a long time and I want the peace of mind to be super safe.

It was not much of an issue before because on my 2005 SR5 I had a bomb proof bumper on the back with recovery points. But on the new truck I feel like I don't need to (or want to) upgrade the bumper so I am looking for a reasonable and safe alternative. Also these don't connect to the frame of the truck so I would be welding them (assuming I could weld) to the metal in front of the truck that is not the frame (sorry, don't know what that is called).

 

Only one missing is the old reliable pre-gen

 

Thats a great looking canopy. Unfortunately I cant afford/dont wanna pay for a new one, so i’m sticking waiting for the rare dclb market.

 

Used plasti-dip to see if I liked it. Which I did but didn’t, so de-badged was the answer haha

I like that location, but it kind of limits you ever using the groove for a 2X6 I would think. I am getting ready to drill mine tomorrow

265/70R17...a little bigger than I was expecting for that size.

 

Exact size I’ve got. It’s just one size bigger than stock I believe. I love the look of them on a stock truck

 

Yeah, that’s on my list to get done soon. Also picked up a black grille surround to drop a little more chrome.

 

Yeah it does limit ever using a 2x6, but I really have no intention on having a platform under the shell.

I thought about a decked system , but at the end of the day I was getting a shell to have more room. I didn’t want to cut it back in half with the decked in the bed with the shell.

Worst case scenario if we ever decided to go with a platform, I will just build a brace on the inside of that location to support it.

When you install yours , feel on the backside of where your going to drill. I’m glad I did because there was vertical fiberglass/ composite support on the back side of the bed. I would have ended up drilling one of the holes straight through it.

Probably wouldn’t have been a big deal, but I wanted to avoid it if possible. So I ended up splitting the difference of 2 of the holes and missed it.
