That sucks, I had an issue with the knock sensor wires that are just below that pipe and had to splice the harness to avoid removing the pipe.
Be careful with the brittle wiring connectors on the knock sensors below that pipe when trying to remove it. And yes a head has to come off to do it right.

I read an article here where somone cut the bracket that holds the 2 pipes together with a hacksaw and was able to remove one by one.

    search knock sensor problems/replacement articles.

but that left the front and rear orings as the only thing supporting the pipe once assembled again.

    Best of luck

Those pictures make you wonder if it didn't develop a hole(s) where the bracket is attached. It's hard to tell but it looks like the bracket is riveted on in that second picture?

Wow! What a mess. Almost makes you want to send the new one out to be ceramic coated.

Needs to go on a cardiac diet. That salt is killing it. Lol.

Glad you got the new one in though.

If you have any access to some form of marine salt away ,or something of that nature, that would really help.

Someone in this thread has been insisting the head had to come off - which you obviously didn't have to do. How did you install the new one?

    @Fullboogie

The Fsm says you need to remove the head and to do it 100% the right way

But this was not a route I wanted to go down as it is a huge job as most of if not all the components on the front of the motor need to come off as the timing cover needs to come off for the chain. Then the cam then the head and with 436000km it would turn into a can of

My pipe was so rotted that I took the bolts out and was able to twist it to get it out. I stuck a pry bar in the pipe and bent it the old one.

Putting the new one in is tricky I bent the mounting tabs to allow the pipe to be placed in. I also used a pry bar to finesse it into its location. This put a small dent on the new tube under here 29D00944-8BCF-4C0C-AA2E-7DBC0B7CA7B0.jpg

If I had my time back I would of bent the small pipe closer to the big pipe on the front as a hose only goes over it. Do not deform the ends just a light bend

I used a punch to put in the hole of the bent bracket to straighten it to the proper location and slid the punch into the bolt hole in the block.

I also used some plumbers tape to wrap the heads of a few bolts so they would stay in the socket

Would I do this again 100% yes !

Wow. What a job.. Good for you for getting it done on a motor with that many kms on it
