True. I’ve been looking at the parts since I brought the new truck home. Thought I could go without but my ratchet straps still have no place. I think I’m going to try to pull the parts from a junkyard. Toyota is proud of that cubby.

As someone who went from a 2018 to a 2021 (same trim, powertrain and cab/bed), I respectfully disagree. I wouldn't say the 18 had real shifting issues, and yes they are the same drivetrain. But they absolutely drive differently.

Going straight across Limited to Limited, definitely not worth $10k. I totally agree.

I just traded in my 2018. TRD Sport 2WD, Double cab for 30K in CO. They planned to ship it to their sister dealership in Phoenix. I got $2K off sticker, plus a $1000 rebate on a 2020 TRD Offroad 4WD. CO has a crazy good tax deal for trade in's so you cant really compare the same way you did. You need to break out the trade in value and purchase price of the new truck and look at them individually.

Transmission still the same quirks as the 18. You have the cruise stuff. All you’d benefit is power seats and android/apple. Spend 500 bucks on a head unit and you can get a wireless one that’s better than oem anyway and not spend 10 grand.

I don't have any shifting issues with my '18 either. Did have TBS-0062-18 (EG1811) preformed when truck was new.

If or when the new tsb for the tranny comes out you will enjoy your 18. Just did it on my 19. I was also thinking of ditching it and go with something else.

can you tell me where I can get this head unit that’s better than the OEM one for $500? Legitimate question, I’m not very savvy about that stuff.p and have been thinking about upgrading the stereo.

Now about these “quirks” you mentioned I do know about those and can say with 100% confidence that my truck has none. So can you expound a little on those too?

How many miles on the 18? Is 3 to 4K per year of use worth it? That’s about 300 a month? If you had a 17 I’d say no to avoid the tss.

Money aside, if you are that unhappy with a vehicle that you would trade it for the same vehicle with minimal changes, why would you go with the same vehicle in the first place? I "get" wanting a new vehicle, I've done it many times myself but if you are doing it just to correct annoyances, expand your search.

It’s you call, at the end of the day your 2018 cost about $300/month or 20 cents per mile of depreciation. The outstanding retention of your 2018s value makes it tempting (if you have the cash) to lock in a new truck for an incremental $11k. If you want it and can swing it go for it.

there’s plenty of threads on TW about the head units. I looked for a few minutes when I was considering a 19 but then the 20 press release came out and I dropped that and just waited. Factory supported warranty yee haw. Kenwiod pioneer etc. and there are some knock offs with Amazon eBay etc that also have actual good reviews too.

as far as the transmission, that’s well documented that a lot of people do not like how it drives. I don’t mind it at all. That said, OP was saying an 18 to 21 would change that - but in reality it won’t it’s the same transmission and mapping, there are TSBs to reflash the ECU for the transmission you can get on an 18 and it’ll drive the same as the 21.

hardly seems worth the 10 to 11 grand in my opinion.

Yep, I’m aware of those threads, but every good unit I’ve seen mentioned were well north of $1K, that’s why I asked where I could get one that’s better for $500.

As far as the trans thing goes, I know there were issues with the ‘16’s and ‘17’s. Real ones, where the truck felt like it was stuck in the wrong gear when trying to pass or make it uphill at highway speeds. I know this because I had buddies who have those trucks and it almost kept me from buying one till I test drove my current ‘19 which has none of those issues.

Their trucks don't have them anymore either by the way. They had TSB’s done and now the trucks run fine.

I'd stick with what you got and see what the new platform looks like. Details will probably be available in the coming 3-4 years.

Your 18 has passed the test @ 53k miles, and is not likely to have any major engine problems. a new rig could fail early, leaving you out in the cold.
And $10k. is not worth it(IMO).

Does your 2018 have brown leather? Are you getting black leather?

    Priceless. :D

I did something similar going from a '17 TRD Sport to a '21 TRD Sport and it cost me about $9k out of pocket. Do what makes you happy. If you've got the money to reset the milage and grab the few extra gizmos that your truck doesn't have (and maybe get that color that you wanted but wasn't available), then go for it.
